One Union Recording Undergoes Technical Upgrades

One Union Recording, a San Francisco–based audio post-production facility, recently completed a facility-wide technical renovation that includes an upgrade to Digidesign Pro Tools HD|Accel 6.7, the latest Waves Gold Bundle and Digidesign Massive Pack 3 plug-ins. Each room was also updated with Digidesign’s Sync I/O and dual 19-inch flat panel LCD displays.

“From day one we have concentrated on being a technologically proficient facility in order to better serve our clients,” says One Union’s facility director John McGleenan. “This latest upgrade across all rooms keeps us on top of that goal.”

One Union senior engineer Andy Greenberg reports, “We now have some seriously powerful workstations with something over 100 plug-ins along with Propellerhead’s Reason for some MIDI and composition work and Ableton Live, which is great sequencing software. Since every room of our facility shares the same horsepower, that gives us a lot of flexibility where we can trade projects between engineers.”

The addition of the Sync I/O, which allows serial nine-pin machine control, will give the facility the ability to control their four Doremi V1 video disk recorder/players from each in-room computer. “Now we can basically drag and drop audio and the video will follow through the Doremi,” Greenberg says. “It’s really slick.”

In the midst of the upgrades, however, One Union is keeping more than a few time-honored pieces of equipment. “We are one of the few post houses around that are going to keep the hot-swappable ultra-wide SCSI bays,” explains Greenberg, “so we added high speed SCSI 128 cards in all our Macintosh G5 computers. This will allow us to plug in up to four hot-swappable drives per machine in addition to the FireWire 800 drives.”
