Rain Computers’ StormDrive is the company’s newest pocket-sized portable hard drive offering a choice of a standard hard drive or Solid State Drive (SSD) designed to deliver large audio and video files at very high speed via the USB 3. The new version of StormDrive offers a single USB 3 connection, referred to as Super Speed USB. The new data transfer offers a maximum throughput of 4.8 gigabits per second, roughly 10 times faster than its predecessor, USB 2.
Inside StormDrive is the same hard drive architecture used in Rain’s LiveBook Mobile Audio Workstation and the new LiveBook V2 Mobile Video + Graphics Workstation. Users are offered a choice of conventional 250GB, 500GB or 750GB high performance drives, which spin at 7,200 rpm and use a 16MB cache to prevent bottlenecks and dropouts. A Solid State Drive, or SSD, is also available offering instant access to data with no moving parts and rapid transfer rates. The newer SATA III SSD drives are available in 256GB or 512GB capacities.
Rain Computers states that StormDrive Multimedia USB 3 Hard Drive, which starts at $99, is compatible with operating systems including Windows 7, Apple’s OS X, and Linux.
StormDrive is available now through the Rain Custom Shop and through select Rain authorized dealers including American Musical Supply, Amazon.com, and Musician’s Friend.
