Women’s Audio Mission Receives NEA Art Works Grant to Support  Girls on the Mic Project

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Chairman Rocco Landesman named Women’s Audio Mission (WAM) in San Francisco as one of 788 not-for-profit national, regional, state, and local organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant. Women’s Audio Mission is recommended for a grant to support “Girls on the Mic,” the organization’s project that trains and mentors more than 400 middle and high school girls a year in music production and the recording arts.

Women’s Audio Mission was chosen from more than 1,624 eligible applications under the Art Works category for this round of funding.

The 788 Art Works grants total $24.81 million and support the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and the strengthening of communities through the arts.

WAM’s Girls on the Mic project cultivates the next generation of women music producers and recording engineers by providing girls, ages 8 to 18, with tuition-free music technology training in a professional studio environment. Youth have access to musical instruments, recording gear, and young women mentors while creating small-scale music and media projects that mirror professional activities. Each year, more than 400 girls are exposed to music technology and STEM-related career paths through WAM’s in-school events and after-school programs.

Chairman Landesman states, “The arts should be a part of everyday life. Whether it’s seeing a performance, visiting a gallery, participating in an art class, or simply taking a walk around a neighborhood enhanced by public art, these grants are ensuring that across the nation, the public is able to experience how art works.”

“We are so honored and thrilled to receive support from the NEA,” says Terri Winston, Founder and Executive Director of WAM. “We’re a relatively small and young organization, so the NEA’s stamp of approval means a lot to us. It will really help us take our Girls on the Mic project to a new level.”
