AEA A440
June 2008—Inspired by its 40 years of experience with ribbon mics, the whisper-quite, phantom-powered AEA (www.wesdooley.com) A440 boasts the greatest usable dynamic range of any ribbon microphone manufactured today. Promising to deliver bass with authority, the A440 has a flat frequency response and holds an accurate figure-8 polar pattern down to 20 Hz.

AEA R88
February 2007—The Audio Engineering Associates (AEA) R88 ($1,895) stereo ribbon mic for Blumlein or M-S stereo recording measures 14 inches long and 2.5 inches in diameter, and weighs 3 pounds (less cable). It incorporates the RCA 44’s Large Ribbon Geometry configuration for a 20Hz bass response and a smooth high end for capturing complex tones. It houses a matched pair of figure-8 mics with 2-inch ribbon motors that are oriented at 90 degrees for superior off-axis rejection. The R88 offers a frequency response of 20 to 15k Hz, -52dBV/Pa sensitivity and handles 165dB SPL @ 1 kHz.

AEA RIBBON GUITAR MIC
January 2005—The R92 from AEA ($895) is a mic that shares the same 2-inch ribbon as the company’s popular — and more expensive — R84, but has decreased proximity effect to avoid the LF build-up that can occur when ribbon mics are placed close to loud guitar cabinets. TO READ THE REVIEW, CLICK HERE

work, and has the comfortable, intimate clarity and extended bottom of
the 44 in a smaller physical package with an extended top end. Options
