Boston, MA (September 25, 2019)—Boston’s Mad Oak Studio closed in 2011 when the building owner decided to “monetize the property,” but now the recording outfit has returned to life with a brand-new WSDG-designed facility.
In the intervening years, owner PK Pandey kept busy with another one of his businesses, design/integration firm AVN | SYS, helping create other studios around the world including Miami’s Dream Asylum, Paul Epworth’s Church Studios in London, and Ann Mincieli and Alicia Keys’ Jungle City Studios in New York City. During that time, he found himself often working with Walters-Storyk Design Group, and when it came to re-grow Mad Oak, he teamed up with the studio designers once again.
“My partner, Benny Grotto, who was head engineer/house producer for the original Mad Oak, and I worked closely with architect/acoustician John Storyk and WSDG COO/project manager, Joshua Morris to create a 1,000-square-foot studio that would genuinely rock Boston’s recording scene,” says Pandey.
The result is a 500-square-foot studio live room and 500-square-foot control room. Pandey opted to outfit the facility with an API 1608 32 Console, Avid Pro Tools HDX, Burl Audio converters and large format monitors custom built by another one of his companies, Symphonic Acoustics.
“Boston’s thriving indigenous live music community has been underserved by a short list of existing studios,” Pandey says. “Our first Mad Oak enjoyed a healthy run for over 11 years. Many of our original clients are still here, and a number of new artists are now in residence. We began hosting sessions even before the studio was completed, with clients like Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes (with Joe Perry of Aerosmith), Shadow Party and Magnetic Fields. Word is already out that we’re ready to rock.”
