Engineer and musical archivist Moses Asch founded the Smithsonian Folkways label in the late 1940s as part of his ambitious effort to document all of the sounds and types of American roots music. Richard Carlin’s book documents Asch’s journey, as well as the evolution of recording technology that Asch experienced first-hand.
