upscale (!) version of his $5,000 VM1A tube studio mic. Priced about
30% higher than the original, the new model has a switch that kicks in
alternate circuitry for a choice of original or a more
“vintage” sound.

October 2002—The first non-tube (FET) large-diaphragm mic from
legendary German mic builder Dirk Brauner, the Phantom C is a
phantom-powered cardioid condenser. The Phantom offers 8dBa self-noise,
28mV/Pa sensitivity and 142dB max SPL at 0.5% THD. Intended for lead
vocals and voice-over applications, the mic’s sound has been tailored
for “big” up-close recording, with trademark Brauner transparency at a

BRAUNER PHANTOM
May 2002—At Musikmesse, tubemeister Dirk Brauner unveiled
Phantom, his first solid state mic, built into the same body size as
his tube Valvet model. This large-diaphragm cardioid condenser has a
minimalist (no-pad-/no roll-off) design and a squeaky-clean self-noise
of 8 dBA. Phantom pricing was not set at press time (probably around
$1,100—with flight case and shockmount).
BRAUNER VALVET VOICE LIMITED EDITION
March 2002—German microphone craftsman Dirk Brauner has
introduced the Valvet Voice® Limited Edition tube vocal
microphone. The Valvet Voice LE offers a cardioid polar response and
features selectable phase invert, hard ground, soft ground or ground
lift. Technicians hand-assemble each microphone from Class-A
amplifiers, custom-built Lundahl transformers and JAN tubes, and Dirk
Brauner himself hand-tunes each production unit. No more than 500
Valvet Voice LE microphones will be manufactured.
BRAUNER VM1 KLAUS HEYNE EDITION
July 2001—Designed to take the performance of the Brauner VM1 to the ultimate level, the VM1 Klaus Heyne Edition ($7,000) is the result of a collaboration between Dirk Brauner and audio hot-rod specialist Klaus Heyne. Surrounded at the “waist” by an elastic-suspended shock-mount, the VM1 features a 79dBA signal-to-noise ratio and comes with a case for the mic, a control unit for remotely setting polar patterns, and a -10dB pad switch, cables and suspension mount.
