The S-Type Compact Live Production Console (shown) and the R-Type Touring Live Production Console will be on exhibition in Cadac’s booth #743 at the 115th AES Convention.

The S-Type Compact Live Production Console (shown) and the R-TypeTouring Live Production Console will be on exhibition in Cadac’sbooth #743 at the 115th AES Convention. Also on show will be the latestdigital developments and the production version of the D20 DigitalInput Mix Matrix. In addition, Cadac will demonstrate its new M20Remote-Controlled Microphone Amplifier, designed to operate with theD20 or as a stand-alone unit with the RM20 self-contained remotecontroller.

Cadac’s S-Type console is building a strong international profile, with Cadac reporting orders across a wide range of applications. In theU.S., Masque Sound has recently deployed both S-Type and R-Typeconsoles for a variety of musical show and touring projects. Theconsole has also been employed in the corporate events sector, withinstallations most recently in Germany and Italy. Other new salesinclude broadcast, theater and touring applications in Europe and theFar East.

The D20 Digital Input Mix Matrix goes into production in late 2003,providing the technology platform for Cadac’s development of afull-scale integrated digital console. Philip Jones is responsible forheading up the Cadac digital program and commented: “Ourphilosophy is to provide a bridge for our existing customers betweentheir current analog consoles and future technological developments. Weare doing this in two ways: through our digital systems that integratewith our analog console designs to provide greater functionality andflexible operation, and through our SAM software. This transcends thetraditional operational platform, giving our users multiple consolecontrol via an ever-smaller control surface. We fully recognize thesubstantial investment that our customers have made in their existinghardware. Our focus is to find ways of extending the functionality ofthat investment without compromising audio quality or performance inany way.”

The D20 provides a powerful and reliable digital engine, ideallysuited for operation as a stand-alone audio processor for smaller-scaleperformances or as an expansion mixer for existing analog Cadacconsoles. The D20 is equipped with 16 line-level analog inputs andoutputs, working with 24-bit samples at a sample rate of 96 kHz. Eachchannel provides 4-band parametric EQ, high- and lowpass filters, compression and gating dynamics control, plus adjustable level routingto 16 output mixes (pre-EQ, post-EQ or post-fader). The D20 is designedfor operation with Cadac’s Sound Automation Manager (SAM) software, which allows users to create a virtual set of modules to reflect atraditional console layout, with the software “views” inturn providing live updates for real-time control of the D20 andoperation of SAM’s cue-based automation facilities. All of the audioparameters can also be adjusted via the unit’s front panel. Instand-alone mode, the D20 uses the SAM software to control externalsounds effects generators via MIDI, and several D20s can be busedtogether to provide additional inputs; for example, 32×16, 48×16, etc.As an expansion mixer, the D20 is equipped with a 37-way“D”-type socket that permits connection into a console’saudio bus to link the D20 directly into the console’s sub group ormatrix outputs. Multiple D20s can be used to expand the console’schannel complement, in multiples of 16.

Cadac’s M20 Remote-Controlled Microphone Amplifier is a 3U 19-inchrack-mounted unit, containing 16 high-quality microphone amplifiers. The unit can be combined with a D20 or a Cadac console, providingadjustable gain from +10 dB to +60dB in 1dB steps; inputs equipped with-20dB pad; inputs provide +48V phantom power, with an output resistanceof 6k8 per leg, allowing up to 14mA load current per microphone; eachinput provides two electronically balanced XLR outputs, with a thirdbalanced output on a 37-way “D”-type connector; allsettings are adjustable via the front panel or via remote control; andthree options for remote control via a PC with SAM, M20 control or viathe dedicated Cadac RM20 remote-controller unit.
