CPC CaptionMaker® software was used to provide live, real-time Spanish language subtitling of the Academy Awards® broadcast.
This real-time capability greatly added to the enjoyment of the broadcast for Spanish speaking viewers, since they could experience the excitement of the ceremony.
A translator listened to the broadcast in English and provided a simultaneous, verbal translation into Spanish. A court reporter listened to the Spanish language translation and entered it as Spanish text into a steno machine. This process took only five to seven seconds.
The CPC CaptionMaker software then instantly transformed the steno machine output into a format which is easy to read by viewers. The CaptionMaker software was used to specify the number of characters per line, and lines per subtitle. The font style was also specified with the CaptionMaker software. The software conveyed this information to a character generator, which output the Spanish subtitles.
