Peter Sluszka, Dancing Diablo (Brooklyn) creative partner/director of animation, helped to create the stop-motion animation for “Walkie Talkie Man,” the first U.S. single from Auckland, New Zealand-based melodic rock/hip hop act, Steriogram. The music video, from their debut Capitol Records album, Schmack!, is scheduled for release to MTV this month. The album will be available in stores nationwide on April 20, 2004.
For the Steriogram video, which is a mixture of live-action and stop-motion, Sluszka worked closely with director Michel Gondry, animator/director of photography Adrian Scartascini and Partizan Entertainment to capture the action that takes place in a yarn universe.
“There was a lot of stop-motion character animation—everything is fabricated of thread and yarn—the Walkie Talkie Man, the music being recorded on a reel-to-reel player, sound patterns, sound waves, automobiles. We also created a number of pixilated shots of the bandmembers, which were integrated into the video,” explained Sluszka.
The final audio effects mix was engineered at Mike Recording (West Los Angeles) by mixer Andy Snavley.
