Horus Shows Versatility

Merging Technologies' Horus networked audio converter was recently used to capture a 17th century comic opera to Pyramix and the score for the new "Huckleberry Finn" movie to Pro Tools.

Puidoux, Switzerland (September 4, 2012)-Merging Technologies’ Horus networked audio converter was recently used to capture a 17th century comic opera to Pyramix and the score for the new Huckleberry Finn movie to Pro Tools.

The opera La Stellidaura Vendicante by Francesco Provenzale is one of only two works that have survived from the composer. Peter Ghirardini from Realsound in Udine was engaged to record the performances for later release by Sony Classical. The sound feed was also used by ORF for the radio broadcast and for a video documentation of the whole opera.

“The latest Pyramix software is excellent and very fast,” said Ghirardini. “The microphone configuration was quite complex using several wireless microphones, which were fed into Horus from two Merging Sphynx 2 A/D converters via MADI.”

Daniel Dettwiler from Idee und Klang in Basel, Switzerland, transported all his recording equipment, including the Horus and his large collection of vintage microphones, to a large former radio studio in Cologne to record the Niki Reiser score for the new German movie production of Huckleberry Finn. The recording featured session musicians from local orchestras in Cologne and Bonn.

Having successfully recorded the string parts to Avid Pro Tools, which was connected to Horus via MADI, Dettwiler returned to his studio in Basel to overdub the other sections of the orchestra, including acoustic guitar, drums and percussion, brass, woodwind and electric guitar.

“The challenge with any location recording is to reduce the complexity without compromising the sound,” said Dettwiler. “We are always looking to minimize the time for setting up and the amount of equipment we have to take with us. Horus is a major step forward for me, having so many channels and different connections in the one unit.”
