Immersive Seminars Invade AES 2018

Numerous educational recording events will highlight AES this week.

Biggleswade, UK (October 16, 2018)—UK loudspeaker manufacturer PMC has finalized the list presenters for its Masters of Audio seminars taking place October 17 through October 19 during the 145th AES Convention in New York.

This year the emphasis will be on the Dolby Atmos immersive sound format. As in previous years, industry luminaries will speak throughout the convention in a PMC demonstration suite (Room 1E06) at the Jacob Javits Convention Center. The room will feature a PMC Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 setup consisting of a MB3-XBD-A LCR system complemented by four IB1S-A III surround channels, a XBD-QB1 subwoofer and Wafer 2 overhead monitors.

Putting the Em in PMC

This year, PMC has partnered with Universal Music Group’s Capitol Studios, whose senior engineer, Steve Genewick, will discuss the latest (and in some cases not even released) Dolby Atmos music projects that have been mixed in the facility’s Studio C, which was recently Dolby Atmos certified. Genewick will present seminars on all three days.

On Thursday, October 18, producer and engineer Greg Wells will present a seminar on the making of The Greatest Showman in Dolby Atmos 7.1.4. The movie and its music have been awarded a Golden Globe and garnered an Academy Award nomination, and is the bestselling soundtrack album thus far in 2018.

Daniel Shores, head engineer for Sono Luminus, will share his experience of recording and mixing immersive audio and will play 7.1.4 Atmos samples from Recurrence by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra; 5.1.4 Atmos samples from Impermanence by the Lorelei Ensemble; and provide a sneak preview of Aequa, a new album by the International Contemporary Ensemble featuring the music of Anna Thorvaldsdottir. All three projects were tracked in immersive audio and are, or will be, commercially released on Pure Audio Blu-ray.

Other presentations include “The Wow Factor” in Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 by multi Grammy-winning engineer Jim Anderson and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, a case study highlighting the use of Dolby Atmos in a video game mix, which will be given by audio director Rob Bridgett.

The seminar program will be interspersed with PMC listening sessions and the returning student competition and critique sessions, where AES members and students can listen to their own or commercial mixes on PMC’s high-resolution systems for evaluation purposes.
