The M-Audio Octane is a pro 8-channel microphone preamplifier withADAT Lightpipe output optimized for multichannel digital recording.Each of the eight channels features the preamp technology found in thecompany’s DMP3 mic preamp.
The ADAT Lightpipe output allows for seamless digital connectivityof all eight channels to multichannel digital equipment such as ADATsand digital mixers. Two word clock connectors provide synchronizationwith other digital devices, including multiple Octanes. Internal syncrates are selectable between 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz, and the unit slavesto external sync rates ranging from 33 kHz to 59 kHz. The individualpreamp outs on each channel also allow connection to any type of analogmixer or recorder with 1/4-inch line inputs, which allow Octane toserve as an 8-channel A/D converter.
Other features include +48-volt phantom power switchable from thefront panel for channels 1 through 4 and channels 5 through 8,respectively; a phase reverse switch is available on every otherchannel for stereo-miking applications; channels 7 and 8 feature theoption of M-S matrix encoding with width control; and channel 1 alsooffers a 12dB/octave low-cut filter at 80 Hz to aid in eliminatingrumble.
This 2U rack unit also boasts 24-bit resolution throughout thesignal chain and delivers signal-to-noise ratio and dynamic range suchas 133 dB for instrument inputs and 120 dB for microphone inputs.Frequency response is 20 to 20k Hz for all inputs (+/- 0.11 dB at midgain for mic inputs, +/- 0.03 dB at mid gain for instrumentinputs).
