Washington, DC (September 27, 2010)–NBC News network’s Washington, DC bureau has installed Lectrosonics wireless systems to service NBC, MSNBC and WRC-TV programming.
The new equipment was sold and installed by the Herndon, VA office of Bexel Broadcast Services. Jim Dugan, sr. project engineer at the office, managed the design and deployment of the new equipment.
“NBC’s Washington area complex houses facilities for both national and local broadcast operations,” Dugan explained. “In addition to the studio that is used for Meet the Press, local NBC affiliate WRC-TV also has their news control rooms and studios located in this building. Further, there is also another studio and control room for MSNBC’s Morning Joe, a weekday morning talk show with Joe Scarborough that covers the news of the day in a panel format with co-hosts Mika Brzezinski and Willie Geist. The deployment of the Lectrosonics equipment was a major undertaking that resulted in new systems for each of these groups.”
For the NBC network, Dugan and his associates designed and installed a wireless setup, specified by NBC’s Joe Shalhoup, comprised of 12 SM Series Super Miniature beltpack transmitters for use with lavaliere microphones along with two Venue series mainframes, each fully stocked with six VRT receiver modules. Eight Lectrosonics IFBT4 compact IFB transmitters and eight R1a UHF beltpack IFB receivers were deployed for communication between talent and production staff.
For WRC-TV, the Bexel designed and installed a system comprising four Digital Hybrid Wireless UM400a beltpack transmitters and a Venue series mainframe stocked with four VRT receiver modules. Four Lectrosonics IFBT1 IFB transmitters and eight R1a UHF beltpack IFB receivers handle communications.
For MSNBC and Morning Joe, Dugan specified eight Lectrosonics SM Series beltpack transmitters and two Venue mainframes, each stocked with four VRT receiver modules. For communications, the Bexel team deployed eight Lectrosonics IFBT1 IFB transmitters and 10 R1a UHF beltpack IFB receivers. This system utilizes a Lectrosonics ALP600 LPDA antenna for both transmit and receive functions.
