Otari has announced the new DR-10N, a 2-channel disk-based recorder/editor

Otari has announced the new DR-10N, a 2-channel disk-basedrecorder/editor aimed at the broadcast and post-production market. TheDR-10N comprises a 3U-high rack-mounting central unit with an optionaledit remote controller. The main unit includes a built-in hard disk andone removable MO drive, with provisions for an additional MO drive.Two-channel analog line-level or AES/EBU digital input signals can berecorded as .WAV files (.WAV, BWF and BWF-J formats). The DR-10N useslinear PCM at standard sample rates between 32 and 96 kHz, with 16- or24-bit word lengths.

Playback of 4-track L/R mix outputs or two stereo outputs issupported, with reverse and +/-12.5% varispeed play. The front-paneldisplay on the main unit includes a 2-channel bargraph level meter (L+Rwhen two stereo pairs are used), and timecode or elapsed timeindication. An intuitive front-panel menu-driven configuration systemis used for setup.

An advanced and highly intuitive graphical user interface providesquick and clear visual access to all DR-10N parameters, includingproject information, program time, sample/bit rates, record/playbackstatus and audio waveform display. Edit data such as locate points andmark in/out edit points, highlighted for use with all of the availableedit functions (i.e., delete, cut, copy, paste, insert, merge), arealso viewable. Rounding out the GUI are the DR-10N’s gradientsoft-level meters with switchable peak/average ballistics.

Familiar transport controls are provided on the front panel formachine room or local use, with Record, Play, Stop, Fast Forward andRewind buttons. SMPTE/EBU longitudinal or VITC vertical intervaltimecode may be used to source or chase timecode from a VTR or othersource. The DR-10N may be synchronized to a variety of sources; video,Word Clock or imbedded AES/EBU clock may be used as sync sources.

A range of edit functions are provided with the optional CB-182 EditController. This remote-control unit integrates with DR-10N’sgraphic user interface, providing simple and intuitive editing, fulltransport control including a jog/shuttle wheel, and quick remoteaccess of all machine functions. Edits, such as copy, paste, etc., maybe applied to two stereo pairs (four virtual tracks). Fade-in/out andcrossfade times are fully adjustable. Special record functions areprovided, such as Auto Punch for pre-set record enable, along with alevel-sensing Auto Record function, which automatically enablesrecording when the DR-10N senses an input signal at a specifiedthreshold level.

A range of locator and broadcast cue functions are provided, alongwith jog/shuttle playback from 1/32x to 2x normal speed. Time expansionand compression and pitch shift are standard, along with a zoomablesample-level waveform display. Multiple levels of undo/redo are alsoincluded.

The remote offers instant playback of edited .WAV files from up totwo parallel stereo pairs. Two faders are included with faderstart/stop switches and independent line-out on/off switching.Twenty-four trigger buttons may be assigned to either of two outputs, and a pause/stop control is provided. With the optional CB-183-S QuickPlay Controller, digitally sampled sounds can be recorded andsubsequently triggered for playback via the assigned Cue Buttons on theCB-183-S remote.

The DR-10N includes built-in Ethernet capability for audionetworking, as well as software for the download and upload of standard.WAV files from and to a network audio server. The recording andediting of additional metadata files is also supported.
