Qualcomm Using Integrated MPEG-4 AAC/aacPlus Coding Technologies

Qualcomm Incorporated, a provider of audio compression for the Internet, digital broadcasting and mobile, announced the integration of MPEG-4 AAC/aacPlus

Qualcomm Incorporated, a provider of audio compression for the Internet, digital broadcasting and mobile, announced the integration of MPEG-4 AAC/aacPlus technology into Qualcomm’s Qtv™ and CMX™ multimedia solutions.  aacPlus enables the delivery of the highest audio quality at the lowest possible bit rates. The aacPlus audio compression technology from Coding Technologies reduces media file sizes while improving sound quality.

Support for the aacPlus technology in the Qtv and CMX multimedia solutions will be available in the second quarter of 2004, beginning with Qualcomm’s MSM6100™ Mobile Station Modem™ (MSM™) chipset.

“Qualcomm is pleased to provide our manufacturing partners with the innovative aacPlus audio decoder technology, enabling wireless handsets to stream audio media files at the highest fidelities,” said Luis Pineda, vice president of marketing and product management for Qualcomm CDMA Technologies.  “Whether the application is targeted for streaming audio or crystal-clear ringtones, aacPlus helps establish a new benchmark for quality audio for the 3G CDMA wireless marketplace.”

“Coding Technologies is extremely pleased to partner with Qualcomm to deploy our aacPlus technology on their MSM platforms,” said David Frerichs, vice president of business development and U.S. general manager of Coding Technologies. “Combined with the technologies Qualcomm offers today on their chipsets, the ability to enhance the multimedia capabilities of the chipset with high-fidelity audio through aacPlus will continue to solidify their leadership in the wireless arena.”

The aacPlus solution uses Spectral Band Replication (SBR) technology to enable audio codecs to deliver the same quality at very low bit rates. The accPlus solution enables streaming and downloadable multichannel audio at 128 kbps, CD-quality audio stereo at 48 kbps and excellent quality stereo at 32 kbps.  These data rates will enhance the audio quality of commercially-available wireless products and enable new applications for future devices.
