Hugh Johonson was last seen at FOH on the road with VinceGill’s never-ending tour. Here, he talks about a piece of gear hecan’t do without:
"I’ve become enamored with the Clair I/O unit: a crossover/EQdevice that operates from a touchscreen. Mine runs from a GatewayTablet PC and it’s hooked up to single-rackspace devices at thefront of house via wireless Ethernet. You can walk the house and turnstuff on or off, or turn it up or down, or EQ it in an unlimited numberof ways. During a soundcheck a couple of weeks ago, the monitorengineer said that we had some LF lobing problems onstage. I took theTablet and stood behind the P.A. and made a -10dB notch between 80 and85 Hz. I slid the stylus back and forth until I found the lobe and thenit was gone. Vince, the drummer, and the bass player were trulyimpressed; awestruck. It’s one of the most incredible audio toolsI’ve used. It’s the future, and I’m excited about thenew digital wave in the sound business. Things will only get betterfrom here."
