NORTHEASTNot to be confused with Dwight Yoakam: Los Lobos was in Indre Studios (Philadelphia) to record a selection of tracks from their latest album, This Time, for Live at the World Cafe. Michael Comstock engineered and Adam Gray-Yohn assisted. The studio also hosted two weeks of pre-production for recordings with Patti LaBelle, followed by a solid week locked out by the diva herself. The sessions were run by LaBelle's music directors Budd Ellison and Nathaniel "Crocket" Wilkie, who is also her chief technician. At press time, LaBelle was scheduled to return to the studio with Shirley Caesar to work with engineer Bogdan Hernik and rehearse an upcoming duet they'll record for Myrrh Records...At BearTracks (Suffern, NY), Jason Miles and Michael Bishop were back in to do a 5.1 surround mix of the tribute album Celebrating the Music of Weather Report on Telarc International. Engineer Doug Oberkircher was assisted by JP Sheganoski. Interscope artists Days of the New were also in mixing an upcoming release; Bill Klatt engineered and co-produced the project with Travis Meeks. Steve Regina, Iain Fraser and JP Sheganoski all assisted on the project...Recently at Avatar Studios (New York City), the members of Journey recorded and mixed their new album for Columbia Records. They spent six weeks on a Solid State Logic 9072 console in Avatar's Studio B, where all overdubs and mixing occurred...Trutone Inc. (Hackensack, NJ) engineer Phil Austin has kept busy with a number of recent mastering projects: Groove Armada mastered their latest single "If Everybody Looked the Same" to vinyl; DJ Nicky Siano mastered two new tracks for release on vinyl, "Tiger Stripes" and "Move;" the Jungle Brothers put together a remastered version of "Straight Out of the Jungle;" and Sunna booked a session to put the finishing touches on that artist's new single, "One Minute Science." Sigma Sound Services (Philadelphia) has added an SSL J Series console and custom Augspurger monitors. The studio is also in the process of outfitting a Pro Tools|24 32-channel rig with Pro Control for 5.1 applications.

SOUTHEASTNew Studio: Kalimba Studios, a new tracking and overdub facility in Overton Hills, TN, opened for business in July. Kalimba is owned by producer/percussionist Jim Roberts and features an automated Mackie 56-input D8B console, 24 tracks of ADAT and a large collection of outboard and mics. Roberts and partner Phillip Wolfe offer in-house engineering and production in three distinct recording spaces, all of which have individual headphone cue mixers...I'm a-pickin' and I'm a-producin': Alabama gathered some of Nashville's high-end producers to play guitar on their recent album sessions at The SoundShop Studios (Nashville). SoundShop owner Mike Bradley engineered and Mark Capps assisted...Columbia Records hosted a live radio broadcast of performances by The Jayhawks and the Indigo Girls in Doppler's Studio E. The broadcast, part of the Columbia Records Radio Hour series, was sent from the Atlanta studio via ISDN to ABC Globecast. The producer was Mitch Matatanski, John Harris engineered and Ralph Ciacciurri and Shawn Coleman assisted. In the studio's A room, Buena Vista Post Production booked ADR sessions for Columbia Pictures' Little Nicky, starring Adam Sandler. Coleman recorded actor Tiny Lister's lines; the assistant was Quinton Nixon...Just a sample of what's been happening lately at Emerald Recording in Nashville: In Studio A, Dan Huff produced a mix for Jolie Edwards. Jeff Balding engineered and Jed Hackett assisted. In Studio B, there was a Chad Brock live showcase for ABC Radio, with Barry Freeman producing and Jason Piske engineering. Studio C hosted the ABC Radio Network satellite tour with Diamond Rio. Freeman produced and Cooper Jones engineered. In Studio 6, SHeDAISY was in the studio working on overdubs with producer Huff, engineer Mark Hagen and assistant Eric Bickel. Recording and mix engineer Salvo completed projects with Tammy Trent and Christian contemporary artist Israel on the SSL Axiom-MT at Back Stage Studios (at Sound Stage Studios, Nashville)...At Catalyst Recording (Charlotte, NC), Rob Tavaglione engineered and mixed sessions with Tucker's Fault, Stronghold, Sckapegoat and Wes Grasty. Bates Brothers Recording hosted Lou "Blue Lou" Marini Jr., who was in with co-producer Ray Reach and engineer Eric Bates mixing a new big band jazz CD. Jazz guitarist Eric Essix was also in mixing his latest Zebra Records/Warner Bros. release, Southbound, with Bates.

NORTH CENTRALAt Four Seasons Media Productions (St. Louis, MO), the Goo Goo Dolls stopped in for a live radio interview aired on The River FM 101.1 and hung around afterward for a recording session with engineers Steve Higdon and Brian Bayley...Medicine Man Recording Studios (Chicago) had Rap-A-Lot recording artists Snypaz in completing six songs for an album set for release in September. L.A. of Noiz Squad Entertainment produced the tracks, with Leonard Part Sixx and Bob "Doc" Pucci engineering. Part Sixx also finished album products with Qualo, Soldiers at War, Triple Darkness, Indymyst and Wild Bilas. The studio has been so busy that manager Cliff Balsamello has announced plans to add a Studio B, which will be a MIDI pre-production/control room...Interlochen Public Radio (Interlochen, MI) upgraded its Control Room A with a Panasonic/Ramsa DA-7 digital console and 16 tracks of Tascam DA-78 recording.

SOUTHWESTHoping for a name change: Pop band Sixpence None the Richer tracked for their new album in The Village Studio B (West Los Angeles). The album is scheduled for early fall release. Paul Fox produced and Tom Lord-Alge mixed. The band was also recently in Ocean Way Recording (Hollywood), where Van Dyke Parks conducted orchestral sessions for the album...Extasy Recording Studios South (Los Angeles) had engineer Eddie Kramer in mixing tapes of Jimi Hendrix material for a four-CD MCA box set that is scheduled for early fall release. The collection will include tracks recorded between '67 and '71, including material recently discovered by Kramer and John McDermott, the catalog manager for the Hendrix family-owned Experience Hendrix company. The assistant engineer on the project was Ronnie Rivera. Also at Extasy, engineer/producer Joe Barresi (Hole, Monster Magnet, Veruca Salt) mixed Swedish rockers Backyard Babies on the Neve 8078. Rivera also assisted on these sessions...Rob Chiarelli was in Encore Studios (Burbank, CA) mixing tracks for artist Sygnature with producer Robin Thicke. Chiarelli also worked at Larrabee North (Universal City, CA), mixing the track "In My Heart" for Motown artist BB Winans. Warryn Campbell produced that track...Steve Wonder's Wonderland Studios (Los Angeles) has installed a Bryston PMC BB-5 monitoring system. The speakers were installed in the main tracking/mix suite...Design FX Remote Recording recorded the annual Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl. Company president Gary Ladinsky mixed the performances, which featured Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.

NORTHWESTProducer Jerry Harrison was in Studio D (Sausalito, CA) with Rebel Amish Radio, working on the band's debut album for Harrison's Eric Thorngren engineered on the studio's new Amek 9098i console; Steve Pierson assisted. Studio D also hosted a mix session for pay-per-view performance by Smash Mouth. Studio co-owner Joel Jaffe engineered and was assisted by Pierson and Robert Cannon...In other former Talking Head news, Los Amigos Invisibles tracked and mixed at Toast (San Francisco) for their upcoming release on David Byrne's Luaka Bop/Virgin label. The album was tracked to analog 2-inch and transferred to 24-bit; vocals and overdubs were recorded directly to Pro Tools. Mixing was done by engineer Mike Cresswell on the 80 Series Neve. The assistant was Albert Beltran. The producer was Toast owner Philip Steir...Need a good laugh? At Music Works Studios (Bellevue, WA), an emsemble of local musicians finished recording the orchestral score for a tribute to Woody Woodpecker. The music will be used as part of the cartoon character's featured attraction at a new Universal Studios Theme Park scheduled to open next spring in Osaka, Japan. The original score, written by David Kneupper (president of Soundelux Hollywood), was recorded by freelance engineer Mike Farrow with assistance by Steve Smith...Acoustic music label Signature Sounds chose Airshow Mastering (Boulder, CO) to master a series of new releases and re-releases from Louise Taylor, Brooks Williams, Richard Shindell and others. All of the work is being done by engineer David Glasser, who is also founder and chief mastering engineer at the studio...Luther Russell put the final touches on his upcoming album at Jackpot! Recording (Portland, OR) with engineer Larry Crane. Crane also worked with The Swords Project, The Old Joe Clarks and Braille Stars. Also at Jackpot!, Jeff Saltzman worked on album projects for King Black Acid and Steve Malkmus (of Pavement), while Joanna Bolme kept busy tracking new songs for the second No. 2 album... Recording in June at Seattle's Private Radio: producer/engineer Jack Endino, Hog Molly, Hotrod Lunatics, Mercury 4. Endino also mixed a project for Lexington Kentucky's Garland Buckeye. Working with Pat Gray were Seattle bands Soulminers Daughter, The Spectres and Old Man Smithers...Rock quartet Clifford was in Seattle's Lion Dog Music cutting tracks with Rick Ruskin engineering.
