Sound One is the largest, most comprehensive audio post-production facility on the East Coast. Housed in two midtown Manhattan facilities – Sound One’s main location in the historic Brill Building on Broadway, and the former Todd-AO Studios East facility on West 54th Street – the combined complex offers eight fully equipped re-recording studios, three ADR studios, two Foley studios and nearly 100 editing suites covering 90,000 square feet. Other services within the Sound One organization include digital and analog transfer suites and telecine/film-to-tape transfer services. That list of services will continue to grow, encompassing audio, graphics, and satellite and broadband services for new media and Internet applications, via Sound One’s affiliation with the other Liberty Livewire group of post-production companies. Small wonder that Sound One serves nearly 90 percent of the feature film post-production projects in the New York area, and half the television post work for the region.

Integration of services and technology has become a hallmark of Sound One’s technical operations. Four of the company’s eight re-recording studios are linked – via an FDDI digital audio network – to a central server/machine room equipped with technology platforms from Akai, Digidesign, Dolby, Sonic Solutions, Sony and Tascam. Reinforcing the integrated approach, these four re-recording studios are equipped with Neve VR consoles with Flying Faders automation and a custom film monitoring matrix designed in-house. All audio and film playback formats are addressed, and clients are able to work in mixed film and video formats (i.e., NTSC and PAL). Sound One’s main stage features a three-position Neve DFC digital film console, situated in one of the world’s finest film mixing rooms and configured for all cinema sound formats, including Dolby Digital, Dolby EX, DTS and SDDS. Sound One’s three ADR studios are all equipped with film and video projection, and all ADR performances can be linked via ISDN throughout the facility or throughout the world. Sound One’s Foley studios are supported by one of the largest prop collections in the world and contain a complete array of surfaces.

Sound One’s other technical resources are extensive and include one of the finest sound effects libraries in the world, as well as the highest level of technical maintenance available. Client support services are on par with the technical infrastructure and range from Internet availability throughout the facility to well-appointed and private individual client lounges. A 3,000-square-foot penthouse terrace overlooks the Manhattan skyline.

But as good as Sound One’s resources are, they are exceeded by its human element. “We have an amazing crew here,” says Sound One President Jeremy Koch. “They are the top talent on the Eastern seaboard and are a match for any other facility in the world. And that extends from the technical talent right through the office support people. Sound One is a true vertically integrated facility, where clients can walk in at one end and leave with a finished master and optical in hand. There is a unique community within the walls of Sound One – one that puts the clients’ needs first, always.”
