‘Tonight Show’ Adds Soundweb

System designer Duncan Robert Edwards provided the design specification for The Tonight Show With Jay Leno’s new audience reinforcement system, which now comprises four BSS Audio Soundweb 9088 DSP units and a 9000 hub, as well as numerous self-powered Meyer loudspeakers.

The equipment was provided by TC Furlong Inc. of Lake Forest, Ill., with project management, design and installation handled by Broadway Video Technologies.

The Soundweb system is receiving eight sends, including house band, guest band, Leno’s mic, etc., from the existing house console and then processing those signals with level adjustment, 8-band parametric EQ and delay before routing them out to 32 zones of Meyer speakers addressing the audience seating area.

“Soundweb is extremely customizable, which was absolutely necessary given the complexity of The Tonight Show’s system,” said Edwards. “I needed something that would handle eight inputs matrixed to 32 outputs, plus be capable of discretely processing every output. For example, certain audio signal paths required phase, while others might need level or delay. Global EQ would suffice for some chains, but then I had to implement quite a bit of sub-EQ for other things, such as the Meyer line arrays. Using Soundweb, I was able to design quite a complex setup, which I really couldn’t have done with anything else.”

The processing and loudspeaker installation was performed over the show’s weeklong hiatus in March. Since then, an additional BSS 9088 and 9000 have been purchased by the Burbank studio to keep on hand for redundant backup.
