Universal Audio launched the UA Fairchild 670 compressor, further extending the range of classic modeled plug-ins for the UAD-1 DSP card.

Universal Audio launched the UA Fairchild 670 compressor, furtherextending the range of classic modeled plug-ins for the UAD-1 DSP card.Existing UAD-1 users can experience the UA Fairchild 670 via a 14-dayfully functional demo that is part of the Version 3.4 UAD-1 softwarerelease.

“The hardware Fairchild 670 is the stuff of audio myth andlegend and a luxury that only the very top tier of the recording studioworld can afford,” said Mike Barnes, director of marketing at UniversalAudio. “UA’s Fairchild 670 not only brings those classic soundsto the realm of the project studio, but also does so at a breakthroughplug-in price point and allows users to run up to 12 mono or six stereoinstances on a single UAD-1 card. We see this as another benchmark inestablishing the UAD-1 as a ‘must-have’ revolutionaryingredient in native DAW systems.”

Universal Audio used its component-modeling techniques to capturethe sonic signature and behavior of the original 670 and added all ofthe available functionality of the original hardware design includingthe popular “mods” to the user interface. However, onesmall change was made to the front panel controls: The meter selectswitch positions, which were used to calibrate the meter on theoriginal hardware, were removed because the software version of themeters do not require recalibrating. The positions on the switch werereplaced with input and output level metering views and the “zero”screw-slot control was disabled. In keeping with true Fairchildhardware tradition, the company included a separate aux panel that addsoriginal rear access controls, common mods or unique digital onlyadditions:
