Women’s Audio Mission has received a grant from the California Arts Council for its upcoming “Preserving Culture” recording series.

Van-Anh Vo At WAM’s Studio
San Francisco, CA (March 6, 2012)—Women’s Audio Mission has received a grant from the California Arts Council for its upcoming “Preserving Culture” recording series.

The California Arts Council is a state agency that directly funds arts programs in California’s communities through competitive grant programs and special projects.

Women’s Audio Mission founder and executive director Terri Winston will oversee six sessions throughout 2012, including musicians from Vietnam, Brazil, Turkey, Peru and Sweden. Session details will be announced monthly. After a successful partnership with the Alliance for California Traditional Arts while recording a group of Mongolian Master Musicians in 2011, Winston saw an opportunity to further “expand the face of sound” on both sides of the board: by providing WAM’s all-female roster of engineers with an opportunity to record and produce a vast array of international artists.

“Women’s Audio Mission has always been dedicated to giving a voice to under-represented groups in the audio industry,” said Winston. “The Preserving Culture series is a truly win-win project that provides our female engineers with real-world session experience, while also expanding the awareness of often overlooked musical cultures and giving an amazing group of musicians, who otherwise would not be able to afford it, the opportunity to record in a professional studio.”

Winston, along with engineer Laura Dean and assistant engineers Jenny Thornburg and Noelle Duncan, will complete WAM’s first “Preserving Culture” session of 2012 with Vietnamese musician Van-Anh Vo, who recently performed at Carnegie Hall in January and will be performing with Kronos Quartet on May 11th, 2012. Kronos Quartet will be joining Vo for a session in April at WAM’s sRead more about the session below.

The upcoming series of sessions includes:

APRIL 2012
Van-Anh Vo: Dan Tranh Zither, Dan Bau, Dan T’rung
First discovering Van-Anh at a gathering of artists with the Alliance for California Traditional Arts, Women’s Audio Mission completed the majority of the tracking of this mostly instrumental session in December of 2012 and will complete overdubs and mixing in April 2012. WAM took a unique approach to capturing the traditional Vietnamese instruments, likening each to a more familiar counterpart. Treating the Dan Tranh, a stringed instrument, as a cross between a dulcimer and harp and the Dan Bau to a single string electric guitar, the team used Earthworks QTC 30s, Mojave MA-200 and Millennia mic pres, among other gear.
