ABC Affiliate WFTS Brings in Solid State Logic’s C100

WFTS, a Scripps Howard station and ABC affiliate, recently installed a Solid State Logic C100 Digital Broadcast Console (pictured) to handle live news shows and studio production throughout the schedule. The 64-channel C100 brings the station the power, flexibility, ease of use and sound quality necessary to move into an all-digital production model.

“When we looked at other consoles, we found that the C100 had better features available to fill our needs,” says Jack Winter, director of engineering for WFTS. “One of the main concerns we have for live broadcast is reliability. We don’t get a second chance to do each show; it is live and immediate and all the equipment needs to work all of the time. Our investigation of the C100 included the reliability factor and, since we first went on line this past January, everything is running smoothly and sounding great. We are really very pleased with the C100.”

At this point in time, WFTS is running both analog and digital audio sources through the C100. Says Louie Cruz, a mix engineer at WFTS and a prime advisor on the C100 purchase, “The flexibility of the C100 is simply amazing. I love having 24 utility buses that I use for my mix-minuses. We used to have only two, and now I am up to using nine. The entire audio department likes the straightforward visual status monitors because it takes only one quick glance to see who is getting what mix. The C100 really streamlines live broadcast production. I think the C100 is just perfect for us and, really, perfect for every live local news operation.”

Cruz continues, saying that “I just sat down at the board and set the whole thing up. The manual was written so well, and the tech support was so outstanding, it was a breeze. It was extremely pleasing once we hooked everything up to see that it worked the first time out. Any station can have a rookie on the C100 and get the work done once the board is configured. Remember, with stations the size of this one, many times a cameraperson might get moved over to audio so it is imperative that the console be easy to use. The C100 has an extremely intuitive design and is very reliable and powerful, delivers great sound quality and is surround capable for 5.1 mixing. We couldn’t ask for more.”
