AES News: Belden Announces Brilliance CatSnake Cat 5E UTP Cables

Belden CDT Electronics Division, a unit of Belden CDT Inc. and a developer of specialty cable products for A/V, broadcast and entertainment applications, recently introduced Brilliance CatSnake tactical field-deployable Category 5e audio/video cables, which are intended for use in patching Ethernet or other Cat 5e digital audio/video formats.

The new Cat 5e UTP cables are AES/EBU-compliant and feature an extremely rugged construction, using Belden’s patented Bonded-Pair design; they have been designed for use in indoor broadcast applications in high traffic areas, as well as tactical, field-deployable for use out-of-doors and in broadcast truck applications.

Brilliance CatSnake UTP cables (product numbers 1304A and 1305A) feature Bonded-Pair unshielded twisted pairs (UTPs) with 24 AWG stranded bare copper conductors and polyolefin insulation. Belden added a heavy jacket wall version for medium-duty use (product number 1304A), or an upjacketed version for the harshest heavy-duty applications (product number 1305A). And, to increase their flexibility, the cables offer stranded (7×32) conductors and matte-finished Belflex jackets. Both cables pass the -40°C Cold Bend test per UL 1381.

The consistency of any UTP cable can determine its transmission distance. Characteristics such as the cable’s conductor-to-conductor relationship along the full length of the cable can effect how far a signal can be carried at a given frequency without excessive attenuation due to return loss. CatSnake UTP Cat 5e Audio cables maintain their impedance and superior Return Loss performance when flexed and handled in rugged environments because its Bonded-Pair design maintains consistent conductor-to-conductor spacing along the entire longitudinal axis, with no gaps to create impedance changes. Belden calls this reliable after-installation performance Installable and Portable Performance.
