Independent engineer, mixer and producer Brian Scheuble (pictured) often uses the Digidesign ICON integrated console to mix high-profile projects within Pro Tools. In a career spanning more than 20 years, Scheuble has worked on projects for Sheryl Crow, Dave Matthews, Don Henley, Dishwalla, Elton John and Mel Tormé. These days, Scheuble typically works in Los Angeles studios, such as The Village Recorder’s ICON-equipped Studio F.

Scheuble began his engineering career working on Trident A-Range consoles and Otari MTR-90 analog tape machines at L.A.’s once-legendary Cherokee Studio, and was an early adopter of the ICON. He gives it high marks for its role in enhancing the Pro Tools environment and his workflow.

“For years, we’ve been recording and editing in the digital environment,” he says, “then when it came time to mix, we were using an external mixer. To me, the ICON really addresses that missing link. It allows me to keep working in Pro Tools and gives me a degree of integration that’s far deeper than I can achieve on an analog console.”

Adapting to the ICON was an easy fit, Scheuble points out. “The faders, the whole tactile feel of the ICON is smooth and responsive. But what’s really impressive is how adaptable the board is to whatever I’m doing. I can organize a mix any way I want, and I’ve got total control of every parameter.

“The number of plug-ins for Pro Tools has really just exploded over the past couple of years, and the ICON gives me full integration and total recall of everything,” Scheuble adds. “If we need to make any changes, I can come back to any project and pick it up exactly where we left it. So we’re always working toward the final mix. It’s a tremendous timesaver.”
