‘Gravity’ Wins 2014 Academy Awards for Sound Editing, Sound Mixing

Warner Bros. Pictures’ suspenseful thriller Gravity, directed by 2014 Academy Award winner Alfonso Cuarón, captured both 2014 Oscar Sound Awards at the 86th Academy Awards, held Sunday, March 2, 2014, at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood and broadcast on the ABC network in a 3-hour, 11-minute telecast. The Oscar for Best Sound Editing went to Supervising Sound Editor: Glenn Freemantle, while the Oscar for Best Sound Mixing went to the team of Skip Lievsay, Niv Adiri, Christopher Benstead and Chris Munro. Mix magazine congratulates all of the winners and nominees.

Gravity provided Freemantle with his second Academy Award nomination. He was previously nominated for Sound Editing for Slumdog Millionare (2008).

Including his nomination this year for Sound Mixing for Inside Llewyn Davis, this is the sixth Academy Award nomination for Skip Lievsay. He was previously nominated for True Grit (2010; Sound Editing and Sound Mixing) and No Country For Old Men (2007; Sound Editing and Sound Mixing).

These were the first Academy Award nominations for Niv Adiri and Christopher Benstead.

Including his nomination this year for Sound Mixing for Captain Phillips, this was the fourth Academy Award nomination for Chris Munro. He was previously nominated for Black Hawk Down (2001; winner, Sound) and The Mummy (1999; Nominee, Sound).

Forget that there is no sound in space. In this stunning portrait of a marooned astronaut struggling to survive alone, thousands of miles above planet Earth, we hear the smashing and tinkling of space vessels struck by debris fields, both inside and out, through Sandra Bullock’s main character. Inside one of the space stations, too, sound takes on added importance as systems fail, machines go through their paces, and our heroine deals with one crisis after another in confined spaces.
