Interscope recording artist M.I.A. stopped at Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tenn. to work with Oscar winners Juicy J and DJ Paul of the Three 6 Mafia (who composed “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp,” which won the 2006 Oscar for Best Original Song) on two songs for her upcoming album. M.I.A has been recording the album in studios all over the world and chose Ardent to give her new tracks that signature Memphis sound.

Hailing from Sri Lanka via London, M.I.A. is Maya Arulpragasam. Her early underground singles, “Galang” and “Sunshowers,” featured sharp lyrics about urban unease combined with raw, danceable beats. In 2004, M.I.A. released a hip hop style promotional mix tape showcasing her distinctive vocal style and quirky rapping over dancehall rhythms and instrumental tracks by Platinum artists such as Missy Elliot and Jay-Z. M.I.A.’s 2005 debut album, Arular, was met with both critical praise and worldwide commercial success.
