MXL Microphones, the professional audio division of Marshall Electronics, annoucned that its V6 Silicon Valve solid-state microphone is now shipping (MSRP $349.95). Made in America, the V6 is a large diaphragm, pressure-gradient condenser microphone.

Designed by Marshall Electronics’ HDTV Labs (El Segundo, Calif.), the unique design of the V6 took three years to complete and features solid-state FET amplifier techniques. The result is a sweet, silky sound that, until now, was achievable only by vacuum tubes—and reviewers are finding plenty to rave about.

EQ magazine’s Mitch Gallagher characterized the V6 as, “a big-sounding mic, with plenty of open top-end, good dynamic response, low noise, and a warm tone [that] performs like a microphone that costs way more money.” Similarly, Joe Hannigan wrote in Mix magazine, “I used the V6 on a variety of pop and classical singers and it handled just about everything I threw at it, offering a smooth and lush tube-like sound.”

The V6 employs a large diaphragm (25mm/0.98 inch) with transformer-balanced output. As a solid-state microphone, the V6 requires no external power supply and does not take time to warm up, as is typical with tube microphones. The V6’s body is a hi-tech titanium silver with a gold-plated grille. The microphone ships in a lined, cherry wood box.
