Recent Sessions at Avatar Studios in New York City

Avatar Studios in New York City reports a number of notable recording, mixing and mastering sessions that took place during the month of November.

In Studio A, equipped with a Neve 8068 console, Nicole C. Mullen was recording her new album for Word Records. Tony McAnany produced with Roy Hendrickson engineering and Justin Gerrish assisting. Dream Theater tracked a self-produced project in Studio A with engineer Paul Northfield assisted by Chad Lupo. Delfeayo Marsalis and Wynton Marsalis recorded music for the film King Bolden; Jeff Jones engineered, assisted by Anthony Ruotolo and Bryan Pugh. Robben Ford (pictured) recorded a new album with Will Lee (bass), Charlie Drayton (drums) and Bernie Worrell (keyboards). Niko Bolas engineered and was assisted by Brian Montgomery.

In Studio B, which has an SSL 9000 J Series console, Nicole C. Mullen recorded overdubs with producer McAnany, engineer Hendrickson and assistant Gerrish. Ralph MacDonald overdubbed with Montgomery and Gerrish. Lastly, D’Angelo overdubbed and mixed with engineer/mixer Russ Elevado, assisted by Gerrish.

In Avatar’s Neve VRP72–equipped Studio C, James Farber mixed a record by Joel Frahm, assisted by Ruotolo. Farber also recorded Sean Jones with producer Al Pryor, assisted by Montgomery. Josiah Gluck recorded music for Robert De Niro’s movie The Good Shepherd with music producer Bruce Fowler and assistants Ruotolo and Pugh. Dave O’Donnell recorded a new album with Deborah Cox that was produced by Rob Mounsey and assisted by Montgomery. Jean-Philippe Allard produced overdub sessions for Abbey Lincoln; Jay Newland engineered and was assisted by Montgomery. Chris Botti overdubbed with producer Bobby Colomby, engineered by Kevin Killen and assisted by Ruotolo. Steve Khan recorded and produced a project with engineer Malcolm Pollack, assisted by Montgomery.

Gary Chester mixed in 5.1 surround for the TV documentary Predators and Prey: An Interview with Don Coscarelli in Studio G, which has an SSL 4000 G+ console. Richard Fiocca produced the music and Montgomery served as assistant engineer. Steven Barkan mixed and overdubbed a Cirque du Soleil project with producer Louie Vega, assisted by Gerrish. Hendrickson mixed music for an HBO project titled Heavenly Voices; the session was produced by Jack McCracken, with Montgomery assisting.

In Avatar’s Pro Tools suite, Studio E, Tony Verderosa mixed spots for V8, Weight Watchers and Bacardi for his company, Thwak!, with engineer Christian Wicht.

In his mastering suite, Fred Kevorkian mastered albums by The Valley Arena, The Alright Ma’s, Finding Four, Low Stars and Escapist Papers. He also mastered albums by Debora Blando and Eileen Ivers.
