Auralex Finds the Right Beat for Kenny Aronoff

Renowned Drummer Turns to Auralex Acoustics to Fine Tune His Room

HOLLYWOOD, CA, JULY 21, 2011 – Auralex® Acoustics, Inc., the industry leader in innovative sound control solutions, recently drummed up the acoustics in Kenny Aronoff’s new drum room/studio space, which is located within John Fogerty’s cartage facility, in North Hollywood, California. Aronoff needed to refine the acoustics in his new drum room/studio but with a degree of flexibility depending on his various recording needs. Auralex suggested several free-standing LENRD® Bass Traps as they provided the adaptable solution he was looking for as well as its HoverDeck™ Isolation Riser in order to decouple his drum kit from the floor.

Considered one of the world’s most influential and in-demand drummers, the list of artists that Aronoff has worked with reads like a who’s who of the music industry. The list includes John Mellencamp, The Smashing Pumpkins, Jon Bon Jovi, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, Alanis Morissette, The Rolling Stones, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Mick Jagger, Ray Charles, Alice Cooper, Meat Loaf and Santana, to name a few. In addition, he has played on more than 30 Grammy-nominated recordings.

One side of Aronoff’s space is covered with a Goo Goo Dolls tour fabric back drop, which naturally deadens the sound of the room. Auralex suggested eight stand-mounted LENRD bass traps, as they provided the flexibility that Aronoff was looking for. These units can be moved closer or further away from the kit depending on how “live or “dry the sound is intended to be. . Aronoff has these positioned in a semicircle around the back half of his drum kit, because he typically wants the room to be more live. The stand-mounted LENRD bass traps provide a great amount of control and helps minimize room ring and provides low frequency control as well.

“I have been using Auralex products for over 10 years, says Aronoff. “Auralex has really helped me tune my new space. There is flexibility with how live I want my room to sound. This flexibility is important so I can accommodate people from all over the world that send me their music for me to record my drums and percussion on.

Aronoff placed his drum kit on Auralex’s HoverDeck Isolation Riser, a product he has been using for several years in both studio and live performance settings. As part of Auralex’s ISO Series™ of Instant Sound Optimizers, the HoverDeck is a specifically engineered drum isolator that reduces coloration from floor resonance by decoupling the drum kit from the structure, resulting in a tighter, purer sound. Stages and traditional drum risers sympathetically vibrate (resonate) with the drums and/or PA system. These resonances feed back to the drums and are then picked up by the mics. HoverDeck’s rugged, laminated core and web-like ISO-Puck modular risers minimize structure-borne sound transmission and sympathetic vibrations between drums and hardware.

“Auralex has delivered innovative sound control solutions to yet another famous client project, says Eric Smith, president and founder of Auralex Acoustics. “As a loyal supporter of Auralex, we are happy to once again provide Kenny with a unique solution to meet his specific acoustical needs.
