AVIOM TUNES IN FOR VIPER STUDIOS’ PARK AVENUE ARMORY PRODUCTIONS

NEW YORK, JUNE 23, 2011—When Viper Studios, a NY-based event production company, is called upon by Manhattan’s Park Avenue Armory arts center to produce live events, the company always relies on Aviom’s Pro64® Digital Snake to distribute audio throughout the venue. Used recently in the event space for five days of musical performances during the Armory’s own Tune-In Music Festival, the Pro64 digital snake was used to feed audio signals to 12 stage monitor speakers, two separate line array speaker systems and 48 channels of stage input during this event.

Once a military drill hall, the Armory’s vast cathedral-like acoustics and informal character are far different than traditional concert halls. The extended reverberation time within the performance center creates a sound quality and program articulation challenge in terms of controlling the sound reinforcement of program material within the hall. Using the Aviom Pro64 Digital Snake, which runs off a single Cat-5 cable, Viper Studios is able to subdue the echo with a systematically placed speaker system.

“The Aviom system is amazing, says Charles Moses, president and CEO of Viper Studios. “The A-Net network is rock solid and all of our Aviom products are work horses. They have proven themselves under all weather conditions and workloads.

Viper’s typical system is a 48×16 digital snake using Aviom’s 6416m Mic Input Modules, a 6416i Input Module and 6416o v.2 Output Modules. In addition to the Aviom Pro64 network that functioned as the core of the system, Viper Studios also used Aviom’s AN-16/i-M Mic Input Modules and AN-16/o v.4 Output Modules during the event as additional signal output routing paths from front of house. The A-Net signal was also routed, via 6416Y2 A-Net Interface Cards, to Viper’s Yamaha M7CL-48 and LS9-32 consoles to mix the performances.

“What makes the Aviom system really superior is its flexibility and ease of use, continues Moses. “You can make any real-time modifications on-site that are needed without delays. The fact that the network can interface with any digital console with Aviom cards is a real plus. The digital snake systems are intelligent by design, which makes installing, setup and operation of the Aviom system a delight.

Since the snakes run off a single Cat-5 cable, integrators will not need to run miles of multi-pair cable throughout a venue. This not only cuts down on time and cost of production but also eliminates stage clutter, an aesthetic benefit for any modern live event. The Cat-5 cable also ensures consistent audio fidelity. Sound companies, touring artists, houses of worship, theaters and others benefit from the system’s performance—both its audio fidelity and its reliability.

Curator and Grammy Award-winner eighth blackbird headlined the Armory’s five-day Tune-In Music Festival, which brought together some of today’s leading new music groups, including red fish blue fish, Argento Chamber Ensemble and Newspeak. John Luther Adams’ Inuksuit closed the festival as part of the group’s New York premiere, which featured 72 percussionists moving simultaneously throughout the expansive hall.
