AVIOM’S PRO16® DIGITAL SNAKE AT ASHFIELD GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL

Provides Flexibility and Ease of Setup for School’s Multipurpose Hall/Drama Studio

BELFAST, UK SEPTEMBER 21, 2009 — An Aviom Pro16® digital snake is helping to make quick audio setup changes at the newly-constructed Ashfield Girls’ High School in East Belfast, UK.

As part of an initiative by the Belfast Schools Partnership to build five new schools across Belfast, the Ashfield Girls’ High School’s recent construction included a multipurpose hall with an attached drama studio. This allows the space to be used for a variety of school functions, ranging from simple assemblies and presentations to full stage drama and musical productions. The drama studio features a removable partition, which allows the studio to be used as part of the main multipurpose hall or as a separate room. Both spaces have their own stage and are used for a variety of functions that require changing the location of the front

of house mix position. Niavac Ltd, the systems integrator for the project, required a means of distributing audio throughout the spaces that could easily accommodate the changes in configuration, regardless of which stage was used for a given event.

“The Aviom Pro16 system was specified for this project to allow simple connectivity of the portable rack and the front of house console, and to allow flexibility for a number of locations for the front of house position,” explains Steve Kennedy, general manager of Niavac. “Using the Aviom Pro16 digital snake allowed us to integrate multiple input locations back to one central processing rack, and for all these points to be available to the front of house position on a single Cat-5e cable while still allowing it to be easily moved. Also, the ability to send mic/line signals across a complex connectivity with zero latency was crucial.”

The Aviom system is used to link stagebox inputs from two separate stage locations; one from the main multipurpose hall and the other from the drama studio, to a rack unit based in a storeroom off the drama studio. Depending on the configuration of the multipurpose room, the Aviom digital snake also allows the mic/line signals to be sent to a portable front of house rack/console that can be connected at any one of three locations. All feeds are sent to an Allen & Heath GL2800 console and the returns are processed via Biamp Systems AudiaFLEX DSP and then sent to a Dynacord amplifier and Dynacord VL112 Speakers.

In addition to offering the school a variety of setup options, Kennedy says the low learning curve was also an important benefit of the Aviom system. “While many schools have enthusiastic and dedicated staff and pupils, a multi-input distributed and interconnecting system can often be very complex to operate, whereas the Aviom system is straightforward,” continues Kennedy. “In addition, speed of setup for this application is also important, where schools are often pushed for time by tight scheduling, putting many demands on teachers and pupils. The Aviom digital snake is simple and fast to set up, making it easy to integrate into the school’s daily functions.”
