BERKLEE COLLEGE OF MUSIC CHOOSES SOLID STATE LOGIC DUALITY SE FOR ADVANCED STUDY PROGRAM

Duality Experience Is the Last Word for Senior Class Study

BOSTON, MA – Berklee College of Music recently installed a 48-channel Solid State Logic Duality SE console in its advanced study mix room. Duality provides Berklee with the ideal bridge between traditional analogue signal flow, and the control of a DAW, giving senior class students a state-of-the-art real world experience before graduation. Duality’s superior sound quality and routing flexibility made it the console of choice for this program.

“Our mission is to expose our students to as many working paradigms as possible to help prepare them for professional careers, says Rob Jaczko, Chairman, Music Production and Engineering Department at Berklee College of Music. “Duality fit in neatly as the upper end console, merging student experience with large format analogue desks, like our SSL 4000 series consoles, with DAW control surfaces. As Duality will be used mainly by our senior class, the console is positioned to illustrate the hybrid experience which is common in today’s professional work flow.

Berklee College of Music offers degrees in everything from composition, film scoring and music business/management, to music education, music production and engineering, and electronic production and design. Its list of graduates is a virtual Who’s Who of major performers, composers, engineers and producers who have influenced all areas of the music industry. With this pedigree, competition is keen for a position in the Music Production and Engineering degree program, with some 280 students accepted out of a total enrollment of 4,000. Berklee offers 13 recording studios all operating 22 hours a day, seven days per week.

“Our goal is to provide students meaningful hands on time with professional tools. Due to our intense booking schedule, we required a robust console that would work well in our unique environment, and have superior sonics. Jaczko explains. “The choice of Duality was certainly not casual as we looked at other manufacturers for the ideal solution. We have had a long and successful track record with SSL products and service, and we were eager to continue that relationship. Our prior experience with SSL, in tandem with the Duality feature set, were the last pieces of the puzzle for our curriculum.

A major philosophy for Berklee is the desire to represent only definitive tools found in the industry. Students see Duality as the top of the professional paradigm not only in the U.S. and Europe, but in studios around the world. Berklee enjoys a very high international enrollment encompassing over one third of the graduating class this past year. These students will return to every reach of the world to work in professional facilities, and it is believed that Duality is a console they will see in the field.

As the Duality room is new, the summer semester students are just now being exposed to the power of Duality. According to Jaczko, “Early reports are overwhelmingly positive. A student told me yesterday that his favorite new feature, unique to the Duality, was the ability to route your line returns through the Variable Harmonic Drive (VHD) circuit. Duality is a wildly flexible console and the sonics are fantastic. We’re very happy with the purchase of this desk.â€?
