EARTHWORKS INTRODUCES PM40T TOURING PIANOMICâ„¢ SYSTEM

Milford, NH – Winter NAMM Booth # 6292, Hall A… Earthworks, Inc., a leading manufacturer of High Definition Microphones™ for recording, live sound, and test/measurement applications, proudly introduces the PM40T Touring PianoMic System. Based upon the company’s highly successful PM40 Piano Microphone System, the new PM40T Touring PianoMic System delivers the sonic performance of its sibling while offering quick, simple, and easy setup, in a compact airline friendly carry-on case.

The original PM40 PianoMic system was designed for fixed installations such as churches, recording studios, and performing arts centers where the size of the carrying case made no difference. Touring artists found the long carrying case was difficult to travel with. The new PM40T Touring PianoMic System employs all the great features of the original and is collapsible so it will fit in a case size authorized for airline carry-on luggage.

Capturing the nuances of the piano is a challenging task. With the new PM40T, musicians and audio engineers can achieve pristine sound quality regardless of whether the piano lid is up or down. The heart of this innovative piano microphone system is two Random Incidence, omnidirectional, 40 kHz High Definition Microphones. Featuring a frequency response ranging from 4 Hz to 40 kHz, these microphones deliver extraordinary impulse response and extremely short diaphragm setting times—making them ideally suited to perform within the piano’s highly diffused sound field (multiple direct and reflected sound sources). Equally significant, these microphones exhibit no proximity effect (change in LF levels), regardless of their distance from the piano strings or soundboard. The result is a remarkably consistent piano sound across the entire range of the instrument.

With Earthworks’ new PM40T Touring PianoMic System, achieving the desired instrument level is never a problem. The two 40 kHz High Definition Microphones included in the system provide incredible gain before feedback because the microphones are positioned very close to the sound source and are within the sound field of the piano. Finally, live sound reinforcement engineers can obtain all the piano level they’ve ever wanted.

Sound leakage from outside the piano is a thing of the past with Earthworks’ PM40T. As the microphones are placed inside the piano shell, they are well isolated from sound outside the instrument. Further, as these microphones are positioned 3-6 inches above the piano strings, the miked piano sound is dramatically louder than any sounds emanating from outside the piano. As a result, any outside leakage picked up by the piano mics is dramatically lower in level than the sound of the piano itself. The PM40T’s adjustable, telescoping tube is supported by the sides of the piano case, facilitating flexible placement of the microphones close to or away from the dampers—facing toward or away from the keyboard—enabling one to achieve exactly the sound characteristics most appropriate to any particular application.

The new Earthworks P40T Touring PianoMic System carries a MSRP of $4,695. It is shipping now.
