Shot Live on Location and Produced by AEG and Act 3D
Evergreen Films provided the latest 3D technology and post production for the filming of “Larger Then Life In 3D: Dave Matthews Band” with the help of systems specialist Integrated Media Technologies. Produced by Evergreen’s partners, AEG and Act 3D, the groundbreaking project was filmed live on location for theatrical release.
Shot in Digital 3D, the format essentially brings viewers onstage, giving them a stunning 360 degree view of each live performance, which includes the Dave Matthews Band at the 2009 Austin City Limits Music Festival, Ben Harper and Relentless7 at the Mile High Music
Festival in Denver, and Gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello at All Points West Music & Arts Festival in New Jersey.
“Our storage needs have grown exponentially with the increase of 3D projects,” commented Evergreen’s post-production supervisor Patrick Devlin. “In addition to needing lots of storage space, the drives have to be capable of playing two streams of uncompressed video for 3D viewing while other people are accessing the video files and moving the project forward.”
To facilitate the project, IMT (Integrated Media Technologies) worked with Evergreen Films to create an all digital file-based workflow for Autodesk finishing and Apple Final Cut Pro editing to support their 2K/3D pipeline for 3D films. “We also needed a SAN network that would work across multiple platforms and tie all of our systems together,” added Devlin. “We evaluated a number of options and integrators before selecting IMT for this project. IMT took the time to understand our workflow and design a solution to meet our needs.”
The advanced workflow systems designed by Integrated Media Technologies leveraged Quantum’s StorNext shared file system and multiple 6620 storage arrays on an 8GB Fibre Channel SAN to deliver the bandwidth required to meet Evergreen’s needs. “Once we agreed on the performance goals it was clear that we would implement an enterprise level StorNext SAN solution to replace Evergreen’s legacy Metasan and XSAN based architectures,” said Jason Kranitz, IMT Vice President of Sales.
IMT also installed Atempo’s software to facilitate archiving and restoration of the company’s digital assets to LTO4 tape technology. Evergreen contracted IMT’s Professional Services to facilitate the complete engagement including project management, design, integration, migration, and ongoing support services for their Culver City, CA and Anchorage, AK facilities.
