Firehouse Productions Fires Up LA-RAK and KUDO for Iceland’s Sigur Ros

KUDO/LA-RAK combo also accompanies L-ACOUSTICS’ new K1 and K1-SUB on North American tours for Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails

RED HOOK, New York – November 2008 — Concert sound provider Firehouse Productions, known for its tours with Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Peter Gabriel and other innovative artists, chose to deploy L-ACOUSTICS LA8-powered KUDOâ„¢ arrays for FOH on Sigur Ros’ recent North American tour leg.

In addition to typically flying nine boxes of KUDO per side for the four-piece ethereal Icelandic post-rock band, Firehouse positioned six dV-DOSC across the lip of the stage for front-fill and set up four SB28 subs per side in a cardioid configuration for LF reinforcement. Two ARCS® cabinets per side were also flown or ground stacked for out-fill in venues where the seating configuration wrapped around the stage. Furthermore, the tour utilized four of L-ACOUSTICS’ new LA-RAK touring racks, each featuring three LA8 amplified controllers.

According to Firehouse systems engineer Jamie Pollock, who did a system prediction using SOUNDVISION at each stop, “The flexibility of KUDO was what impressed me for this type of tour. Some of the venues we played were quite small while others, like The Greek Theatre in Berkeley, were larger with 8,000 seats and 180 degrees of seating. With all of these different environments and configurations, I was constantly changing the enclosures’ K-Louver settings between 110 and 80 degrees. But aside from the 9,500-capacity Red Rocks Amphitheatre where we brought in V-DOSC®, KUDO was able to deliver and give us the coverage we needed. Jelle Kuiper, the front-of-house engineer, and I enjoyed using the new LA8 presets and always received consistent results.”

Pollock was also enthusiastic in his praise of L-ACOUSTICS’ LA-RAK. “We used a double-stacked LA-RAK per side, which was the other beauty of this tour. There were so many backline techs, and some of the theaters were so small that having the LA-RAK on each side of the stage do four subs a side, the KUDO, and everything else was extremely convenient. Everything stores in the rack, and the compact footprint was absolutely crucial in some of these venues.”

Prior to the 17-date Sigur Ros trek, Firehouse’s KUDO arrays had most recently been on the road with Radiohead serving as out-fill systems for the group’s domestic tour leg, which was the first North American trial run for L-ACOUSTICS’ new flagship K1 and K1-SUB loudspeakers.

Now, Firehouse Productions is using the very same KUDO and LA-RAK systems on Nine Inch Nails’ current U.S. and Canadian sweep. Deployed again for far left/right audience coverage, the nine KUDO complement a system that features 16 K1, eight K1-SUB and three dV-DOSC flown per side for main PA, 16 SB28 subs set up in a cardioid configuration, and ten dV-DOSC for front-fill–all powered by LA8 amplified controllers housed in six LA-RAK per side.
