GameSoundCon scores Mortal Kombat composer for keynote

This year's game audio conference features the composer of best-selling video game Mortal Kombat 11

Seattle, WA (Sept. 10, 2019) – GameSoundCon, the largest professional conference for video game music and sound design, returns to the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, this October. The keynote speech will be held by no other than Wilbert Roget II, who composed the music for Mortal Kombat 11, which broke a 12 year game industry record for being the highest selling game across all platforms, and the best selling game of 2019*. Wilbert’s other credits are Star Wars: Vader Immortal, Call of Duty: WWII, he contributed music to Destiny, and composed the music for Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire.

The Advisory board of GameSoundCon has once again put together a compelling program and the conference boasts many lauded game music, sound, technology, dialogue and Virtual Reality experts. Conference Founder and Executive Director, Brian Schmidt looks back at 10 years of solid growth: “For our very first GameSoundCon in 2009, we had 14 speakers and 45 attendees. This year we’ll have over 115 speakers and expect over 400 attendees.”

Apart from Wilbert Roget’s keynote speech, there are many highlights like the talk about MINECRAFT and how VR/AR/MR can possibly be integrated in the straightforward aesthetics of the hugely popular game: “Minecraft Through a New Lens: Recontextualizing Audio for Mobile AR”.

Riot’s Bryan Higa will discuss how the use of audio storyboards were essential to the sound design consistency of League of Legends’ 144 different characters (‘champions’).

Cody Matthew Johnson (Devil May Cry 5, Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite, Resident Evil 2) will host the panel “Songs & Games: Creative Collaboration and Translating the Emotional Power of Songs into Video Games” with some of the whos-who of game music: Adam Gubman (Hearthstone), Sungha Hong (Tree of Savior, IMCGames), Jack Wall (Call of Duty), and Inon Zur (Dragon Age). The panel will provide a unique opportunity to gain insight on how songs are functioning in modern video games, how technology is utilized to emphasize dramatic effect, as well as advice on the value of collaborating with artists from the point of view of the composer and developer.

The conference offers over 70 sessions that cover topics for both those new to games as well as seasoned game audio professionals, from Game Audio Essentials to Audio for Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality, Research and Wwise Special Training Sessions.
