HOLOPHONE DONATES H3-D MICROPHONE TO RECORDING WORKSHOP

CHILLICOTHE, OH, AUGUST 14, 2008 — Students at the Recording Workshop were surprised by fellow alum and Holophone Founder and President, Michael Godfrey, when he donated one of Holophone’s® H3-D Surround Microphones to the school. Helping prepare the audio professionals of tomorrow, the H3-D will allow students to gain a competitive edge that is essential for succeeding in an aggressive field where surround recording is becoming prevalent.

The primary goal of the Recording Workshop is to help individuals with a sincere desire and dedication to learn by teaching them the creative operation of professional audio recording equipment. Offering exceptional training in audio recording and music production, programs at the Recording Workshop can be completed in eight intensive weeks of full-time, hands-on classes. From the education that Godfrey received at the Recording Workshop, he was able to recognize a void in the recording industry and make the move from sound designer to inventor and manufacturer.

“It was my experiences at The Recording Worship which inspired me to develop a newer and more effective means of recording surround, says Godfrey. “The H3-D was designed with students in mind – so what better way to give back to the school that led me to a profession in which I’m so passionate about, than to help to inspire the next generation of audio engineers.

The H3-D was initially used by the school to record Foley work and 3D sound effects for several Sound-for-Picture projects that the students were working on, and is now a permanent fixture for all of their Sound-for-Picture projects. The Recording Workshop’s newly offered Advanced Program is the first-of-its-kind to include the H3-D in its curriculum. The Advanced Recording Engineering and Music Production Program is an optional 57-hour extension to the school’s 180-hour Core Program with focus on production values. As their engineers have been developing class materials for the new program, the H3-D has proven to be a favorite and an ingenious way to acquire source material in a surround format, while also being well-suited for educational purposes.

“It is simply the most elegant execution of positioning high-quality mic capsules for realistic surround recording, explains Jim Rosebrook, director of the Recording Workshop. “We try to teach our students to appreciate smooth workflow, and the H3-D makes the process of surround recording quick and easy.

A simple and affordable introduction to surround sound recording, the H3-D is a portable 5.1 multi-channel surround sound microphone that automatically delivers 5.1 channels with no external mixing or signal manipulation required. Located inside the mic’s elliptical casing, the H3-D has five mic capsules for the five perimeter channels with a multi-directional pickup pattern and 20Hz-20 KHz frequency response as well as a discrete LFE microphone with a 20Hz-100Hz frequency response. These mic capsules are set up to correlate with a typical home theater setup, making it easy to obtain the proper result.

“We are very grateful to Michael for his generous gift, continues Rosebrook. “He has shown his foresight not just in developing innovative recording gear, but Michael has shown vision in helping future engineers get experience with these brilliant tools.
