Co-Sponsors Atempo, Isilon and Southpaw Support New Production Strategies

Integrated Media Technologies, Inc. (IMT) hosted a production summit at SIGGRAPH 2010 with leaders from the burgeoning 3D production community. Co-sponsors Atempo, Isilon Systems and Southpaw Technologies supported the lively panel discussion with 3D production leaders analyzing the current state-of-the-art and offering insights into how to best strategize for the various 3D markets, including feature films, sports events, TV, Internet and mobile programming.

The success of 3D movies in 2009 resulted in 10% box office revenue growth in the US and Canada, the highest growth

rate since 2005. The trend continues in 2010 with more than 20 new features planned for theatrical release in 3D. Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland” has been the year’s biggest box office success, surpassing Avatar’s opening weekend box office record and generating worldwide revenues of more than $1 billion.

Among the insights explored at the IMT SIGGRAPH summit were the challenges of lighting live 3D events, with sports as relatively easy when compared to complex stadium concert events. Editing 3D productions with smooth continuity is far more difficult than in traditional 2D filming. While digital storage is now relatively inexpensive, management of mammoth databases is an ever-growing quandary. These and other topics were discussed with an underscore of great optimism for a medium that offers both great challenges and rich rewards.

On a lighter note, Action 3D’s president Wayne Miller remarked on the sophistication of young audiences. He recounted the eighth 3D film he attended with his 5-year old son, who removed his 3D glasses at one point because his son recognized that the 3D in the scene was very mild, really appearing 2D.

Introduced by IMT’s CEO Bruce Lyon, organized by Executive VP/Sales Mike Braico, and moderated by CTO Rob Kobrin, the panel included:

David Kenneth, executive producer at I.E. Effects, which acts as the primary liaison between the show (creative) and the business (client).

John Rubey, president of AEG Network LIVE, pioneer in major live concert events and cutting-edge distribution.

Wayne Miller, president / CCO of Action 3D and award-winning producer/director of over 100 filmed entertainment projects.

Jonathan Dern, president and co-founder of Cinedigm and SD Entertainment, and a global strategist and visionary responsible for major 3D concert features.

Anthony Lopez, director of information technology at Legend 3D, the nation’s largest 2D to 3D conversion studios.
