Janie Hendrix and John McDermott, “Keeper of the Vault,” have mastered Jimi Hendrix’s live historic performance during the 1970 Atlanta Pop Festival, at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Hendrix performed on the Fourth of July to the largest American audience of his career, presenting his signature rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner” to accompany the celebratory fireworks display.
“Janie is CEO of Experience Hendrix and she is always on hand,” explained McDermott. “We’ve done a number of projects here with Bernie, ranging from reissues of classic studio albums to new releases like Jimi’s performance at the Miami Pop Festival. He’s without a doubt a brilliant mastering engineer.”
John McDermott is catalog manager for Hendrix’s vast body of work. It’s a role he’s played since joining Experience Hendrix in 1995, when the legal rights to Hendrix’s music and unreleased tape archive were returned to his family. He has co-produced every archival Jimi Hendrix since that time.
“I’m a co-producer of this project and I’ve been involved with the Jimi Hendrix releases now for 20 years,” said John McDermott. “It’s my passion. I’ve written about it, produced films about it, and done all kinds of work with the archives. Jimi is really such an extraordinary talent.”
In addition to the contemporary Hendrix work, Grundman has mastered vinyl releases in the studio’s analog mastering studio. “The fans have really responded to Bernie’s care and attention to detail. Jimi took a lot of pride in his work, and we’re honoring that by working with people like Bernie Grundman, Eddie Kramer and other creative professionals.”
