JE’CARYOUS JOHNSON’S “CHEAPER TO KEEP HER DELIGHTS WITH SOUND FROM D.A.S. AUDIO

Nashville, TN – December 2010… When a married couple is ready to call it quits, they always want different things. Raymond Mays (played by Brian McKnight) wants a divorce and Morgan Mays (played by Vivica A. Fox) wants alimony. When the fed-up judge bangs her gavel, she decides Morgan doesn’t deserve half… she deserves it all. Morgan gets everything—the house, Raymond’s retirement, and some would say even his self-esteem, leaving him with nothing but the thought; it would have been cheaper to keep her. Such is the premise for this travelling R&B musical. It’s bright, witty, the music grooves… and it’s driven by a sound system drawn from the Aero catalog of D.A.S. Audio.

Hermitage, TN-based Prosonic AVL, a design/build firm that provides audio, video, and lighting for the installation market, recently sold a D.A.S. Audio Aero system to Nashville, TN-based Jet Productions, the company contracted to provide sound and lighting for the show. The system, which consists of twelve D.A.S. Audio Aero 12A 2-way, mid-high line array elements and four LX-218A high performance powered subwoofers was purchased specifically for the touring musical. Ensuring quality sound for the show was a major consideration and that’s why Edward Hobby, Prosonic AVL’s owner and Titus Cunningham, owner of Jet Productions, worked so closely on selecting the system best suited to the nature of the project.

Selecting the right sound reinforcement system for Cheaper to Keep Her presented a number of challenges, as Hobby described. “This show has some really top notch R&B performances,â€? he explained, “so speech intelligibility and clear, natural sound reproduction for both the vocal performances and the accompanying 5-piece band were absolutely essential. Further, the system needed to be very adaptable in terms of setup. At some venues, the system is flown, at others, it’s ground stacked. Frequently, there’s precious little time to set up and configure the system, so it really has to sound good straight out of the box—regardless of which way it’s set up. Sound quality was the foremost concern and the D.A.S. Aero system is first-rate in that regard.â€?

“One of the reasons this system was selected, Hobby continued, “was its ease of setup. The system’s self-powered design greatly simplifies cabling and the transport dollies are equally noteworthy. The system stays right in the dollies when it’s ground stacked—making positioning the enclosures easy— and, similarly, the enclosures are a snap to remove from the dolly when the loudspeakers get flown. Likewise, efficient truck pack is always a consideration and, for this, the D.A.S. system is terrific.

Regardless of whether the sound reinforcement system is flown or ground stacked, Hobby reports the loudspeakers are configured for a left-right setup consisting of six Aero 12A enclosures and two LX-218A subwoofers per side. “This is a really potent loudspeaker system, Hobby notes, “and yet it’s keeps a very low profile. The system is usually positioned to the far left and right and, hence, you really don’t even see the enclosures—but you certainly hear them!

In addition to the D.A.S. Audio Aero system’s performance attributes, Hobby was equally complimentary of D.A.S. Audio of America’s customer/technical support services. “When this project came about back in March, there was precious little time to get the equipment and put it out there for the first show, Hobby said. “D.A.S. Audio’s customer service was absolutely great. Everyone at the company was extremely responsive. They handled the sale efficiently and shipped us the equipment right away. That kind of customer service is hard to come by these days.

Hobby reports that with their new D.A.S. Audio Aero system up and running, everyone involved with Cheaper to Keep Her is very pleased with the audio quality. “Everything has been working great, says Hobby. “We’ve had zero issues with the system and the show’s producers are thrilled with its performance. They’ve received numerous compliments from both the show’s performers and patrons. The D.A.S. Audio sound system was, without question, the right tool for the job.
