Loud & Clear’s Bill Deavers at Miami University’s Hall Auditorium, the setting for The Ides of March‘s debate scene
CINCINNATI, Ohio — Celebrated actor and director George Clooney recently spent several months in Ohio and Michigan shooting scenes for The Ides of March, a new film scheduled to premiere later this year. Both starring and directed by Clooney, The Ides of March is based on Beau Willimon’s play, Farragut North, about a governor campaigning in the presidential primaries.
Bill Deavers of Cincinnati-based Loud & Clear, Inc. was hired by the film’s production team to serve as a political consultant and provide sound reinforcement for the pivotal Democratic debate scene, which was filmed in early March at Miami University’s Hall Auditorium in Oxford, Ohio. As he had done for many “real” presidents and presidential contenders in the past, Deavers chose to specify an L-ACOUSTICS system for the event.
Loud & Clear deployed six L-ACOUSTICS 8XT coaxial enclosures for the shoot — two adjacent to the podiums on stage for the actors and four across the stage lip for house coverage. All six 8XTs were powered by an LA8 amplified controller.
“When the cameras were rolling, it was absolutely crucial that the actors be able to clearly hear each other to get their lines right on cue,” explains Deavers. “And the same was true for the entire audience in the packed 750-seat venue; they needed to be able to hear every word to remain completely engaged with the story line. Although the 8XTs are very small, they provided excellent clarity and coverage for all of the The Ides of March‘s actors, extras and crew.”
“We’ve done sound reinforcement for five presidents, three vice presidents, and tons of senators, governors and candidates at all levels,” he continues. “We’ve also worked on quite a few debates, including the 2004 VP debates between Cheney and Edwards. On high-profile projects like these — as well as something like this film — my reputation is on the line. Presidents, Popes, festivals or fairs, my reputation demands the best, and the best is L-ACOUSTICS.”
In addition to Deavers, Loud & Clear’s Matt Fish, Steve Lagemann, Nate Schneider, Kathryn Scott and Joe Zanotti assisted on the scene’s shoot and may ultimately end up on screen in the final film.
Scheduled to open domestically on October 14th, 2011, Sony Pictures Entertainment’s The Ides of March features an all-star cast, including Clooney, Ryan Gosling, Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood, Paul Giamatti and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
