Southpaw and IMT Create Largest 2D to 3D Production Tracking and Asset Management System
With the aid of Southpaw Technology and Integrated Media Technologies (IMT), Legend3D is now the country’s largest 2D to 3D conversion company. In less than one year, Legend3D‘s US operations have grown from a staff of 40 to over 250.
The success of 3D movies in 2009 resulted in 10% box office revenue growth in the US and Canada, the highest growth rate since 2005. The trend continues in 2010 with more than 20 new features planned for theatrical release in 3D. Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland” has been the year’s biggest box office success, surpassing Avatar’s opening weekend box office record and generating worldwide revenues of more than $1 billion.
Legend3D is now nearing the completion of converting three recent blockbusters to 3D for
DVD release later this year, and already has several projects ready to enter it’s pipeline. To accomplish these daunting projects, the company has installed Southpaw’s TACTIC, a massive production and digital asset management (DAM) system, with the supervision of LA-based Integrated Media Technologies.
“We were originally using an inflexible system that was forcing us to work within the confines of a complicated interface and toolset,” said Barry Sandrew, founder, president and COO of Legend3D. “What we really needed was a smarter, more flexible solution to keep our assets secure and our teams productive.”
“TACTIC is a combination of both production management and asset management all in one,” explained Tony Lopez, Legend3D‘s Director of Technology. “With the pace that our company grew, we couldn’t keep up using old folder structure and file name conventions. Now we finally have a good rhythm going and have grown this into a tool for production, as well as asset management, accounting, info for our sales teams, and accurate productivity trending so that we can predict and deliver.”
With its roots in the successful frame-by-frame conversion of B&W films to color, Legend3D is the creator of patented 2D to 3D conversion technology. Merging his expertise in graphic arts and neuroscience, Legend3D‘s founder, Dr. Barry Sandrew, developed the process that integrates sophisticated technology with skilled artistry for the conversion of film, television, advertising, online and mobile content from 2D to 3D. The company is now deploying TACTIC across its San Diego studio to manage all of the digital assets in its conversion projects.
Combining asset management, workflow management, project management and communication tools with a dynamic Web-based interface, cross-platform support and robust API, Southpaw enables large teams of artists and animators to work with terabytes of digital assets. “TACTIC gave us an easy-to-install, easy-to-use system that we could quickly customize to our specific workflow,” added Sandrew.
“IMT is the company we can always count on,” said Legend3D‘s Tony Lopez. “I’ve worked with Executive VP/Sales Mike Braico on five major projects in five years and IMT has always come through with a creative integration of the right equipment and the right software for the job.”
“Having worked with some of the largest studios around, we’ve learned that no two productions are alike,” said Gary Mundell, CEO of Southpaw Technology. “We designed TACTIC from the ground up to speed the production process by adapting to any workflow. We look forward to working closely with our systems integration partner Integrated Media Technologies and the talented team at Legend3D to keep pace with their phenomenal growth.”
