IN THE MIX GETS INDIA’s FIRST API 1608 ANALOG CONSOLE

MUMBAI, INDIA – JANUARY 2011: When considering equipment for his new studio, iconic Indian playback singer Hariharan sought an analog console that would produce a different sound than that of the various small, all-digital studios throughout the region. After researching and testing out several mixing desks, he and his sound engineer/producer KJ Singh decided that In the Mix needed an API 1608.

“We’d used an API Legacy console at Phase One Studios in Toronto to mix Hariharan’s last album, Jab Kabhi Bolna, so we got to appreciate the full API experience then,” said Singh. According to Singh, when the duo finished demo’ing their console options they found that the 1608 delivered the sound needed to set their productions apart from the competition.

“It just had that sound,” said Singh. “Plus, the 1608 has a small footprint, but is very big

on inputs, routing and flexibility.”

In the Mix consists of three spacious rooms – a live room with a voice over/vocal booth, a control room and a dedicated machine room. Singh and Hariharan built In the Mix from scratch, converting a roomy residential apartment into what is now a world-class facility. The studio will primarily be used to record music for India’s huge feature film industry, but will also be used to record individual artists and bands.

To celebrate the opening of In the Mix, API recently hosted a reception at the facility where the 1608 console had been installed in September. Dan Zimbelman, director of sales at API, said, “We’re excited to place India’s first API 1608 console with Hariharan in his new Mumbai facility. The recording community in India has expressed its need for excellent analog audio gear, and API is committed to supporting that community for the long term.”
