PEPPER STUDIO RELIES ON SOLID STATE LOGIC AWS 948 CONSOLE/CONTROLLER FOR FAST-PACED PRODUCTIONS

Sophisticated DAW Control Streamlines Workflow

MUNICH, GERMANY – Pepper Studio, a part of Artists & Acts Music Publishing, a record label that covers everything from pop and comedy to rock and folk, relies on a Solid State Logic AWS 948 Console/Controller in Studio A to handle its fast-paced music and sound design projects for film, TV, games and corporate audio branding. The AWS 948 delivers SSL’s signature SuperAnalogue™ sound combined with an expanded channel count and DAW control to handle each production need. The console is joined by an SSL Nucleus in Studio B for sonic and operational consistency.

“We compose and produce music for the German film and television industry, as well as the German automobile industry, including pieces for Volkswagen, Audi and Bentley, says Tobias Wendl, CEO, audio engineer and composer for Pepper Studio. “Because of our workflow and our love of high-end gear for Studio A, we needed a console that was more than a controller and that meant getting the AWS 948. When composing music and mixing for film and corporate audio branding, there are different workflow demands because of the fast production process. We needed a console that allowed us to react very quickly to changes, brought together our outboard gear and gave us control of our DAW systems. The AWS 948 was the perfect choice for us and, of course, it sounds amazing.

Beyond the generous amount of external processors and microphones, Pepper Studio captures to Nuendo, Logic and Pro Tools® DAW systems as well as to a Studer A80 2-inch 24-track tape machine. The AWS 948 allows for an easy, seamless transition between full analogue recording and capturing to a DAW, giving Pepper Studio the power to accommodate any working situation. During film scoring, for example, the composing process on the Nucleus leads into the mixing process on the AWS 948.

“Both Studio A and Studio B are connected to our live room for recording vocals and instrument tracks, Wendl explains. “Our music emotionalizes brands and products, actors and scenes so sonic consistency between the two studios was an imperative. Nucleus gave us the same DAW control as the AWS, and has two of the SuperAnalogue™ mic pres found on the AWS, preserving our high-level, benchmark sound quality between the two studios.

According to David Merkl, media composer for Pepper Studio, “For composing original material for films, corporate projects and s, we depend on both rooms working together to get through a project quickly and professionally.

The AWS 948 gives Pepper Studio access to 24 stereo or 48 mono channels for maximum operational flexibility. The high channel count, in combination with the innovative A-FADA mode where motorized analogue faders follow DAW automation data, became one of the main improvements for workflow.

“We now can do all our automation inside the DAW, then swap the data to the AWS, states Wendl. “Now we have automation without decreasing CPU efficiency! Our clients need a production partner who can react very quickly to changes and the AWS 948 paired with the Nucleus, gives us this capability while preserving our high level analogue sound quality.
