SAE Institute Miami Faculty Member Places Original Songs With ABC’s “Nashville”

SAE Institute Miami Instructor and Curriculum Author for Music Theory and Music Business Bill Gordon has placed an original jazz composition entitled “That Sweet Thing in G, Please” on the television program “Nashville”, which airs on the ABC network. Gordon wrote, performed, engineered, and produced the track.

SAE Institute Miami Instructor Bill Gordon has placed his original jazz composition “That Sweet Thing in G, Please” on the television program “Nashville”, which airs on the ABC network.

“I started doing film and TV music around 2002, and submitting them through independent A&R company TAXI,” says Gordon, who’s a graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston.

“I’m now signed with a half-dozen publishers and have had some good placements on a variety of TV shows and in movies, including ‘Rizzoli & Isles’ (TNT), ‘Parenthood’ (NBC), and The Fosters (ABC).”

Gordon got involved with SAE Miami in 2005, when two SAE students hired Gordon to help them with their music theory courses. The curriculum resonated with Gordon and he offered his services to help modernize the course. He was quickly hired by SAE as a music theory curriculum writer and teacher, and in 2006, expanded his role by teaching a new Music Business course at the school.

“Overall, SAE’s curriculum is very practical and pragmatic,” says Gordon, who has taught music privately and at colleges in Boston, New York City, Los Angeles, Miami and Vienna. “I’ve had the pleasure of working with a lot of SAE grads in many parts of the world over the past nine years, and without exception, they really know their stuff and are easy to work with – which are two things that were drilled into them by SAE.”

In terms of how SAE’s educational offerings stack up against competing programs, Gordon feels that some schools focus too closely on “non-relevant topics”, while others seem “more show than substance, yet they’re all working to up their game.” While SAE Miami’s centerpiece Audio Technology Program delivers high value, strong educational and practical preparation, and excellent career opportunities for grads, Gordon advises his students to remember that “the competition in the marketplace is stiff,” and that truly talented audio technology pros “also need to constantly up their game, too.”

Given his busy schedule of songwriting, production, and teaching, Gordon works hard to find balance.

“It’s a challenge to see how many balls can be kept in the air, and then prioritize them by what’s important vs. what’s urgent,” says Gordon. “While it’s hectic, a life that’s devoted to music is one that I’m grateful for and fortunate to have, and my SAE gig is a rewarding part of it.”
