Urban Outfitters HQ Gets Performance and Saves Installation Costs with Meyer Sound IntelligentDC

Urban Outfitters, Inc. has added Meyer Sound systems to two headquarters conference rooms located in the former shell of the Philadelphia Naval Shipyards. Featuring remotely powered IntelligentDC™ technology, the systems bring precision audio coverage while eliminating the need for electrical conduit.

Located in one of the campus’s pre-World War II brick and steel structures, the two conference rooms primarily serve the company’s Anthropologie brand. “We had previously installed a multi-zone with IntelligentDC products in another building on campus,” notes Dave Brotman, president of DBS Audio Systems, the project designer and integrator based in nearby Coatesville. “IntelligentDC was chosen again to deliver the same premium quality audio that company management expected.”

By combining the performance advantages of self-powered loudspeakers with the installation efficiency of Class 2 wiring, Meyer Sound IntelligentDC technology makes exceptional audio accessiblein installations where AC outlets at each loudspeaker location are not desirable. A single, five-conductor cable carries remote power and a balanced audio signal to the loudspeakers from a rack-mount power supply and signal distribution unit. In the US and many other countries, conduit is not required.

“Meyer Sound’s IntelligentDC products proved to be the perfect solution,” says Brotman. “I didn’t want to compromise on loudspeaker selection, particularly in the larger room where I needed the precise and predictable coverage of the UPJ horn to deal with the acoustics. With the IntelligentDC model, I can achieve the same response as the standard UPJ, without having to bring in electricians to run new conduit. This resulted in installation cost savings compared to typical low-impedance systems.”

With a 40-foot ceiling, the larger room features two UPJ-1XP VariO™ loudspeakers, two UP-4XP loudspeakers, and one UMS-SMXP subwoofer, all with IntelligentDC technology. In the smaller conference room with a 12-foot ceiling, eight MM-4XP self-powered loudspeakers with IntelligentDC technology are mounted to ceiling beams in two rows, while low end is supplied by a wall-mounted UMS-SM subwoofer. Both systems incorporate a Galileo® loudspeaker management system with one Galileo 408 processor for signal optimization. The equipment racks for each room include a Rane mixer, Tascam CD player, and three channels of Sennheiser ew 300 Series wireless systems.

With annual revenues exceeding $3 billion, Urban Outfitters is a multi-national clothing retailer offering five separate brands for sale online and through over 400 retail locations worldwide.
