PACIFIC, MO, March 31, 2014 — When Alan Redstone, who directs System Design & Engineering at Leominster, Massachusetts-based Wavelengths Pro Audio, LLC, takes on a project, he knows that the AV systems racks are a key foundational component in the design. So whether the firm is working on a recording studio project, a corporate boardroom design, a renovation of a college sports facility, a first-responder training facility or any of the other widely varied spaces that this pro audio retailer and integrator works in, Redstone chooses racks, power and cable management from Lowell Manufacturing Company, a leading U.S. manufacturer of professional AV Products. Recent projects involving Lowell racks include Doyle Field in Leominster and Becker College in nearby Leicester. Doyle Field, which was a large-scale renovation of a local football field, used a pair of LWR-3523 Lowell racks, one for amplifiers and the other to house processing equipment. Both were secured with the optional LFD-35 solid front door with keyed lock, preventing unauthorized access to the equipment. The swing-out racks were also secured to their backboxes with keyed locks. At Becker College, where Redstone employed Lowell’s LWR-1223 rack with LFD-12FV fully vented front door, electronics and DSP were also protected via a secure Lowell door lock.
“Lowell racks are versatile for us,” says Redstone. “The wall racks are just perfect for remotely mounting everything. You can get them out of the way, they work every time, and they’re not weighing a thousand pounds. And again, with all the different fasteners that they give you with it, it makes it much easier to deal with, which is especially important when we’re in the field.”
As an example, Redstone cites the reversible design of Lowell’s hinged wall racks. “Many times we’ve gotten to a site where HVAC or another contractor has unexpectedly put something in our way, and we had to rethink it,” he explains. “But because of Lowell already thinking ahead with their ‘ambidextrous’ design, that job is made a lot easier for us onsite, because we can have the whole front swing out left or right, as needed. Any problems on site cost time and money, and we often have to eat it as the integrator because we’ve signed off on a budget and a quote. But Lowell saves us money by solving problems for us on the job.”
Citing an installation at Dean College in Franklin, Massachusetts, that uses Lowell LWR-3523 racks with LFD-35FV fully vented steel doors in a theater used for both performances and teaching theater arts, Redstone notes that Lowell’s LWTCR-3R tilt open recessed wall rack allowed access to CD/DVD and local inputs. These racks are the only ones of their kind. “I don’t know how else we would have come up with it,” he says. “That’s another reason why I tend to design systems with Lowell in mind. They make some unique items that work.”
Redstone further notes Lowell’s comprehensiveness: “You can add on all the accessories that you need, like shelving, rack blanks, and wire management. It’s really a complete package. For the integrator it makes it easy to one-stop shop. And the quality of the manufacturing is superior – we have never had a rack that got to us that was damaged during transportation or didn’t work or that had an issue with any way of the manufacturing process.”
Finally, Redstone appreciates Lowell’s cost effectiveness. “Lowell products are right within the budgets for most of our projects – educational institutions, colleges, schools – which all tend to be pretty tight fiscally.
