Oscar Sound Winners 2013

As it turns out this year, instead of two Oscar statues for the winners in the Best Achievement in Sound Editing and Best Achievement in Sound Mixing categories, there were three, thanks to a tie in the voting.

In the Best Sound Editing category, two films were declared winners: Per Hallberg and Karen Baker Landers won for Skyfall, and Paul Ottosson won for Zero Dark Thirty.

Last night’s win was the third for Hallberg, who previously won along with Karen Baker Landers in 2008 for Best Sound Editing for The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) and in 1996 for Best Effects, Sound Editing for Braveheart (1995). Hallberg was also nominated in 1998 for Best Effects, Sound Editing for Face/Off (1997).

Karen Baker Landers received her second Academy Award.

In 2010, Paul Ottosson won in both the Sound Editing and Sound Mixing categories for his work on the 2008 film The Hurt Locker. In 2005, he was nominated for Sound Editing for Spider-Man 2 (2004).

The 2013 Academy Award for Best Achievement in Sound Mixing went to Les Misérables and the team of Andy Nelson, Mark Paterson, and Simon Hayes.

For both Hayes and Paterson, this was their first Oscar nomination and win. Nelson has been nominated 18 times (see the full list of Nelson’s nominations at imdb.com), and last night’s win marks his second Academy Award win, the first being in 1999 for Best Sound for Saving Private Ryan.
