As first-prize winner of the third-annual Turner Classic MoviesYoung Film Composers competition, Timothy Smith received a Korg TRITONMusic Workstation. Presented by Turner Classic Movies, Film Music,MP3.com and sponsored in part by Korg and Guitar Center, thecompetition offered a grand prize of $5,000 and a first prize of theKorg TRITON Music Workstation.
The competition was conceived three years ago, as TCM was searchingfor composers to create music for the 200-plus silent films in thechannel’s archives. This year’s competition attracted over400 entries. Contestants went to TCM’s Website (www.turnerclassicmovies.com) and downloaded one offour 90-second video clips. They created a score for the clip, and thenuploaded their score via www.mp3.com. Judges narrowed the entries first to20 contenders, then to the top 10, from which Smith was selected. Hisscore was for the movie Nosferatu.
“I’m really happy with all the functions and features of theTRITON,” commented prize winner Smith. “About 12 years ago, when Ifirst started to get into keyboards, a friend of mine had a Korg, and Iwas really impressed with its sounds and arpeggiator. Currently,I’m working as a composer for short films, along with commercialwork, and I know the TRITON will help me further my art.”
